Class Experience

In this class, students will have the opportunity to think creatively, practice some acting skills and interact with other students. Students should bring a costume to class. This can be as simple of complex as you like.
The class will begin with an introduction exercise, giving us the chance to get to know each other before we get to know our characters.
Next, students will have the opportunity to introduce their characters and share some facts about their character with the rest of the class.
We will then explore movement and voice to further develop those characters.
Students will then interact with one another as their characters.
Finally we will develop a short skit that utilizes all of the characters.
In a class such as this, my teaching style is very informal and the class is driven by student ideas and input. This class will never be the same twice!

Learning Goals

Students will learn simple improvisation skills as well as some replicable steps to character development. They will be introduced to how actors use their bodies and voices and will learn some basic ensemble and storytelling skills.

Parental Guidance
Learners may be physically active in this class. Please be sure they have a safe environment with room to move around, and that they are able to move safely in their costumes. Learners are encouraged to bring a water bottle to class, as we will be using our bodies and voices. If you feel your learner may require off screen supervision in order to stay safe in an active class, please have an adult close at hand for the duration of the class.
Supply List
Students should bring a character costume--this could be anything that they like. It can be a favorite movie or book character or a character of their own making. Costumes can be made from things around the house--fancy clothes, parents' clothes, hats or scarves, blankets, boxes, etc. If a student plans to wear a costume that covers the face, they should not wear to class but wait and put on after introductions (and they should be able to see, speak and move safely when wearing it).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love teaching all levels and abilities. I have worked with children in various settings, including home school, charter school, camp, after-school clubs, and a performing arts center. I will be offering classes for a range of ages including Drama Book Club, Creating Characters, Devised Drama: Online Edition, and more. I have earned an Associate's Degree in General Studies, a 90-HR Certificate in Early Childhood Education, a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre and a Master's Degree in Education with a focus on Inclusive Classrooms. I am currently teaching ESL online. I have worked, in various capacities, in academic, community and regional theatre for more than 20 years. For over a decade, I have been a contributing artist to one of the longest running professional women's theatres in the world. There I have had the opportunity to be a part of the creation of many world premiere works that empower women. The drama classroom gives students an opportunity to be creative, to explore themselves and the world they live in, and to make connections with others. It is a place where struggling students can shine, gifted students can explore new challenges and disengaged students can find a tie. I believe that learning should be enjoyable for students and teachers! My husband and I live in Baltimore City, MD, with our two kids and many pets, and we own a local coffee roasting business and cafe.
