Class Experience

This class will be one of several in a writing series of lessons for young writers. If you think your child's writing is average or lacking creativity, one of my writing series classes will help brighten and dazzle up their writing. This class is geared towards upper elementary level writing students. Learners should have a basic sense of sentence structure, conventions, and organizing ideas for writing. It is not intended for writers that are just beginning to write.

One could say that the onomatopoeia writing technique is the "popcorn" of the writing world. Onomatopoeia is using sound effect words in your writing. If used to recreate specific sounds or moods, these fun-to-read words can give your stories, poems, or plays just the right zing. This target writing skill will be taught through modeling, think alouds, and mentor texts. I will help the learners see how this particular writing skill helps create a scene in the reader's mind.

After observing models done by the teacher and mentor texts, I will lead a guided/shared writing example using this target writing skill. Learners will participate in a discussion about this strategy and offer writing ideas.

Finally, students will have their own independent practice opportunity. Learners will have the opportunity to share their writing during class, if they would like.

Classroom/Teacher Notes:
-Please feel free to send a schedule request and I will try my best to create a class that better fits your schedule
-If I do not receive more than two enrollments, I will have to cancel the class and you will receive a refund.
-If your child has a specific learning need, please message me and we can figure out together how to successfully accommodate your child.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Chelsea Matthews and I am certified K-6 teacher. I have taught in the public school system in Florida for 7 years. I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. I am also an online ESL teacher. I am excited to begin homeschooling my own children this year!

My favorite subjects to teach are reading, writing, social studies, science, and math. So, basically, all subjects!

I am passionate about leading my learners to the world around them, whether it be through books, observations in nature, or pushing for inquisition. Enriching student learning is definitely a passion of mine. I feel that learning should be a journey, and at times, fun!

I live in Florida with my husband, three boys, two cats, and two dogs! I enjoy reading fiction, trying new cooking recipes, and relaxing at the lake in my backyard.
