In this class we will start slowly, with non-fiction writing. Learners will choose a subject they love - video games, soccer, cooking ... whatever they choose - and write about why they love that subject. They will be coached along the way, keeping them on task and productive. We will move from there to writing a "how to" piece on the same subject, paying attention to specific detail and order of instruction. Lastly, they will write a creative story about someone else enjoying that same subject. I will review each of their finished pieces and give positive reinforcement. Although I will point out grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors, those will not be a focus in this class. Our goal here is to show learners they CAN write, and that it can actually be fun. They will be coached on soft skills they can use to breakthrough writer's block and use their past experiences and imagination to be a competent and inspiring writer. Class 1 - Identify subject and begin writing. I will coach along the way. (Learners will need to upload their completed first drafts in the classroom for my review before the next class.) Class 2 - Detailed review of completed first drafts and work on rewrites. Finalize pieces, upload to the classroom, and get instructions for second assignment. Class 3 - Work on second assignment in class. I will coach along the way. (Learners will need to upload their completed first drafts in the classroom for my review before the next class.) Class 4 - Detailed review of completed first drafts and work on rewrites. Finalize pieces, upload to the classroom, and get instructions for final assignment. Class 5 - Work on final assignment in class. I will coach along the way. (Learners will need to upload their completed first drafts in the classroom for my review before the next class.) Class 6 - Detailed review of completed first drafts and work on rewrites. Finalize pieces, upload to the classroom. I will review and provide feedback to parents on their learner's progress.
Learning Goals
This class will focus on getting words on paper (or computer) as opposed to the mechanics of writing. Your learner will come away with the soft skills required to generate thoughts that can then be transferred to the page.
