2 in-class hoursClass Experience
One of the best ways to become a better writer is to write. Writing together is a fun experience and a chance for us to be inspired and to learn from our peers. As a class, we will create a fantastic world--time travel, magic, alternate dimension, other planet, fairy world, etc. We'll develop a magic system for that world, which could be magic, time travel, space travel, super powers, etc. Usually, some type of conflict will arise as we develop our world and will give us ideas for the story. Then, we'll come up with a character and some of the obstacles for our story. On the last day, we will either make an outline for the story or we will write the story together. During each class, I will take notes on the class story and will post the notes in the Outschool classroom so students can think about the story in between classes. I will guide the students, asking questions and prompting them to think about different aspects of stories. However, the story will belong to them, with their ideas and words. While this class is primarily a creative collaboration, we will address story writing topics as they arise, and I will answer students’ questions. Each story is unique, so the order in which we write the story may change based on story and class needs, but we will cover the following in this general format: Class 1: Create a fantasy or science fiction world for our story and the magic, superpower, or technology for our world Class 2: Create a character for our story Class 3: Create obstacles for our character Class 4: Outline or write our story together
Learning Goals
In all my creative writing classes, the main goal is for students to learn confidence in their own writing and to enjoy writing creatively.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I will guide discussion to make sure it is age appropriate. Land of Stories (magic), Wings of Fire (dragons), and Percy Jackson (mythology) are often mentioned.
We will discuss conflict, antagonists, villains, and challenges. At this age range, conflict is usually in the form of disagreements between friends, natural disasters, villages attacked by dragons, etc. However, villains such as witches and evil overlords are often mentioned.
Please contact me with any concerns before class.
Supply List
I will take notes on the class story, but if students would also like to take notes or sketch ideas, they may want paper and a writing utensil. Handouts will be supplied on a class-by-class basis.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I may reference Writing Magic by Gail Carson Levine, which is an excellent resource for creative writers of all ages.
