How are sound effects made? What goes into voice acting? Who puts together sounds for a film, and how? If these questions intrigue you, then allow me to introduce you to the wonderful world of sound design! A great class for film enthusiasts and curious artists! This course will be interactive with lots of subject-related games and discussion interspersed throughout the lessons. There will also be some fun homework assignments where we put into practice what we are learning. Week 1: Types of sounds in movies and T.V., Foley In the first class of the course, we will define what sound design is as well as the four types of sounds in film and T.V. (foley, dialogue music, and sound effects). We will learn how to classify these types of sounds, practice identifying them, and go through popular examples of how specific foley sounds are made. A case study will also be explored on famous sound designer Ben Burtt's creative choices when making foley sounds for the popular Disney movie "Wall-E". Homework: Students will choose a foley sound from a given list and find a household item that can be used to make that sound. Week 2: Sound recording and perspectives In this class, students will learn about the different roles and microphones used to record sound. They will also learn about sound perspectives as well as how to evaluate environments for optimal sound recording. Homework: Students will choose a two minute scene and classify all of the sounds heard by sound type Week 3: Dialogue and Voice Acting This lesson will focus on dialogue and what goes into recording dialogue in a sound studio. Voice acting will also be explored, along with the different techniques used by these actors. We'll also do a little voice acting ourselves! Homework: Students will record lines from a given scene Week 4: Music and Sound Effects! The final class will focus on the role of music and sound effects in film, as well as how they are made. We will end the course with some review games and building the sound of a scene from scratch! I strive to provide a class environment that is fun, engaging, and a positive space! I hope to see you there! :) Headphones are recommended for this class. A print-out will be sent to be printed and used during class 4. Hi there! Teacher Tirath here! Nice to (virtually) meet you! :)
I am so excited to be on Outschool to teach creative courses! I have 4+ years of teaching both English and math to students of all ages, and have been teaching English online for almost three years. I also have experience leading arts camps as well as working with children on film sets. I am excited about this opportunity to be able to continue to open my classroom to students from all over the world!
In terms of my qualifications, I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Film Production. My specializations were screenwriting, directing, editing and sound. I have made a few short films of my own which have been shown at film festivals, and I also have done lots of editing work in the past few years. Needless to say, creativity is my passion!
I also have a Bachelors of Science, and love teaching classes that blend both science and the arts!
My teaching style is friendly, patient, and full of positivity. I believe that learning should be enjoyable, so I like to keep my classes engaging and full of fun! Also a positive learning environment is a must in my book!
When I’m not teaching or doing film work, I like to read books, draw, listen to music, and spend some time in nature, whether that be hiking, walking, or biking! I am a total tree hugger!
Hope to see you in my classroom! :)
