US Grade Preschool - 1
Children are full of stories, some from real life experiences and some from their imagination. This class makes connections between play and storytelling, encouraging young learners to use materials they have at home along with their imagination to create stories of their own. The class starts with an interactive story. Children will have opportunities to participate in the storytelling through movement, repetitive phrases, adding details, or making predictions at key moments in the story. After the story, learners will be invited to start creating a story of their own and share their story ideas with each other. Each week I share a different original story and a different way of telling a story. By exposing children to multiple ways to engage with storytelling, they can bring storytelling into their play, explore different ways of representing their ideas, and in the process gain valuable oral language and early literacy skills. As this is an ongoing class, you are welcome to join anytime - each class follows the same format, but is unique in content. Topics: February 6th: Drawing stories February 13th: Playdough stories ** No class February 20th ** February 27th: Block stories March 6th: Loose parts stories March 13th: Drawing stories March 20th: Playdough stories March 27th: Block Stories ** No class April 3rd ** April 10th: Loose parts stories ** No class April 17th ** April 24th: Drawing Stories We regularly rotate through these 4 types of storytelling in this order. Learners are welcome to bring these supplies to class or any of their favorite storytelling materials. Why Storytelling Matters: Storytelling is a valuable tool in supporting literacy development. Children can become detailed and complex storytellers long before they are able to physically write out all of their ideas. As they become more confident oral storytellers, they build vocabulary, develop attentive listening skills, gain an understanding of story sequence, as well as developing critical thinking skills. Storytelling is also valuable for supporting social skills such as turn-taking, exploring big feelings, and looking at situations from a different point of view. I strive to offer an inclusive learning environment, if there is a way that I can help your learner feel successful in this class or if you have any questions, please send me a message.
Learning Goals
Learners will explore multiple ways of storytelling and in the process build key literacy skills such as: expanding their vocabulary, developing attentive listening skills, gaining an understanding of story sequence, as well as developing critical thinking skills. The overall goal of this class is for children to feel confident in their abilities to be storytellers and motivated to include storytelling in their play, which over time will support their literacy development.
