Day #1: What is a poem? Brainstorming for how to write one. Class creates a poem together (Acrostic). Individual writing time to write autobiographical, cinquain and color poems. ACROSTIC: In Acrostic poems, the first letters of each line are aligned vertically to form a word. The word often is the subject of the poem. An example is- Incredible knowing Night time wake up! Something whispers, "Push through. Do this! Be brave!" I listen and feel courage, hope. Right now I'm Encouraged Determined to step forward: INSPIRED --Ms. Jackson AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL: Write a poem about yourself using this form or another poetry form. Line 1: __ Your name Line 2: _, _, _ 3 personal characteristics or physical traits Line 3: Brother or sister of__ or son/daughter of Line 4: Who loves__, __, and __ 3 people, things, ideas Line 5: Who feels__ about__1 emotion about 1 thing Line 6: Who needs__, __, and __ 3 things you need Line 7: Who gives __, __, and __3 objects you share Line 8: Who fears__, __, and __3 items Line 9: Who'd like to see, __1 place, or person Line 10: Who dreams of __ 1 item or idea Line 11: A student of__ your school or teacher's name Line 12: __ Nickname or repeat your first name An example is: Kirsten quirky, hippy, vivacious sister of Willa who loves teaching, trees and cats who feels sad about fires who needs pets, trees and chocolate who gives lessons, love and laughs who fears rattlesnakes, control and yells. who'd like to see the ocean who dreams of peace Ms. Jackson --Ms. Jackson CINQUAIN Cinquains have five lines Line 1: Title (noun) - 1 word Line 2: Description - 2 words Line 3: Action - 3 words Line 4: Feeling (phrase) - 4 words Line 5: Title (synonym for the title) - 1 word An example is - Kitten playful, soft climb my leg my heart beats fast Katara --Ms. Jackson COLOR: A poem about your favorite color. Express your feelings about a single color with analogies or similes or list nouns which are (or remind you of) that color. Another easy form is to use the 5 senses-looks like, sounds like, smells like, tastes like, feels like. Color looks like Color sounds like Color smells like Color tastes like Color feels like An example is - Black Black is sleepy, safe It's Netlfix, popcorn and couch cushions Black tastes like tea and cookies Black smells like spices. Black feels like a fuzzy robe and sounds like a popping fire. Black is slimming! Black is stylish! Black is an evening out to the opera and a fine restaurant meal. Black is eyeliner, greasy hair and actors poets and art Black sooths the soul. --Ms. Jackson Day #2: What is poetry recitation? How can a reader engage with an audience when reading poetry? Practice. Students choose the favorite poem they have written and recites it to the class.

Teaching, performing for children as “Queen of Theatre,” or directing “Ms. Jackson’s Theatre!,” Kirsten Jackson facilitates imagination and confidence using silliness and laughter to create a safe place where students shine.
A widow who raised three 2E children on an acreage surrounded by animals, she believes creativity is key to authentic self-awareness. Jackson has 27 years teaching experience and 15 years directing experience. She currently teaches theatre and writing for Outschool and Young Scholars Academy.
Sydney Clemens says, "Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else." Ms. Jackson's goal is to allow students a safe place to explore and shine and comfortably be themselves.
