This one-time course will cover the history of the United Nations from its beginnings after World War II through the present time and how it has tried to achieve its main goals of keeping world peace, promoting economic and social development of nations and promoting the human and civil rights of minorities including women and children. The course will also cover various agencies like the International Labor Organization, UNICEF, UNESCO, World Health Organization and other UN agencies. The class will involve written material as well as some websites that students can explore for further information. Children will be expected to look over the material and to ask or answer questions. We will also be looking at some Youtube videos prepared by the UN.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how nations attempted to resolve their differences peacefully in the aftermath of World War II. They will learn about how the rising influence of national liberation movements and the influence of the Cold War influenced the United Nations. They will also learn about some of the different organizations of the United Nations like UNESCO, WHO and others world agencies.
Students will also be asked to look at whether or in what ways the UN has achieved any of its goals stated under its Charter, under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

I began teaching at Outschool a year ago. I have had six years experience as a social studies teacher in the New York City schools and currently teach as a substitute teacher in New Jersey . I enjoy teaching history, both world history and American history, as well as civics. Having a law background as well, spending twenty years as a lawyer, I think learning the history of how government functions and the history of the Constitution help prepare students for their future role in society.
I taught an Advanced Placement class in New Jersey on Politics and Government as well as an honors class on Criminal Justice Systems.
