Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Based on James L. Swanson's excellent book, The President Has Been Shot!, which I used as an outline for this course. The book is intended as a supplemental reader for the class.

This event, one of the most dramatic in U.S. history, has spawned popular conspiracy theories to explain Kennedy's assassination. I'll touch on those in the lesson, but I mostly subscribe to the "Case Closed" viewpoint, that only Oswald killed Kennedy. There are several mysteries involved with JFK's death, however, and we explore those briefly.

I. JFK's life and personal history
a. Early Life
b. Election
c. Major Events of his Presidency (such as the Cuban Missile Crisis).

II. Lee Harvey Oswald
a. Who was he and where did he come from
b. His plot to assassinate Kennedy

III. The Events of November 22 and following
a. The fate of Lee Harvey Oswald
b. The legacy of the Kennedy assassination, including some conspiracy theories.

Learning Goals

This course will explore the events leading up to November 22, 1963, the assassination of President Kennedy, the manhunt, and the effects on American Society.

Parental Guidance
These events are disturbing, but no explicit video of the shooting will be viewed during the course. Students will learn of the Zapruder video that was recorded during the shooting, however, and they may become curious to view it on their own on Youtube.
