The focus of my class is self confidence, risk taking and encouragement. If you have a reluctant reader, a shy or anxious child, this is a safe place for them to be able to express themselves through a script. If you have a child who loves to try different vocal choices, this is the perfect place to try them out! I have found Reader's Theatre to be an amazing way to boost the student's comprehension of what has just been read.

We will read the lines together to build trust and confidence and then assign parts.
If any child is feeling shy or unsure, I will read the lines with them. We will support each other until everyone is comfortable to read independently.
There is no need for memorization. Scripts will be provided before class. Costumes, props and make-up are a welcome addition but not a requirement.

Throughout the class, I will ask students pointed questions to encourage ideas, opinions and imagination.
We will discuss main ideas such as:
How Anne's difficult life has shaped her character.
What does it mean to be a kindred spirit?
Matthew and Mirilla's choice to keep Anne or send her back.
Being true to yourself
How to handle adversity

Learning Goals

Reader's Theatre is cooperative, and provides opportunities to learn with support. It's creative and encourages language experimentation and risk-taking. It provides natural occasions for practice and enables children to build a repertoire of reading strategies with a purpose.
Apart from the fun aspect, there are many opportunities for the emergent reader to become comfortable with reading a script.
The children will have fun listening to each other, reading together and celebrating their accomplishments.
Pacing, inflection, expression and fluency will all be practiced.
Through open discussion, students will learn thinking out of the box, improvisation and will use their imagination!
Students will gain literary comprehension and critical thinking as we delve into some of the big themes.
