Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This continuous, once-a-week, 55 minute class covers diction, detail, imagery, syntax, and tone. Understanding Voice (diction, detail, imagery, syntax, and tone) is a key component of success in all writing and reading required of high school and college students in all subjects. Mastery of Voice is crucial for success in all AP (Advanced Placement) classes with writing components.

Every class will cover four different Voice components using mentor texts, analysis, discussion, rewriting, and writing for application.

The class will begin with "Brain Warmer" focused on either diction, detail, imagery, syntax, or tone to prepare the students for what will be covered during the class. The class will then be structured in four mini-class segments: the first will cover analysis and practice on one component, the second focused on another component. All mini-classes are structure in the following manner:
1. A short introduction to the Voice component
2. Reading and Analysis of a mentor passage - using the lesson's Voice component as the lenses
3. Two written and spoken discussions focused on the rhetorical decisions being made and the implications/purpose
4. A short writing assignment applying what was learned in steps 1, 2, and 3.

Every class will include a brief lecture, followed by writing/then verbal discussion, followed by writing and sharing (if so desired by individual students).

Students will learn with lectures, slides, printable handouts, and discussion.

Students should be in a high school or AP class. This class does not build on previously covered material in earlier class; students can enroll in the class at any point during the 25 weeks.
