Truthful Acting for New and Advanced Actors (Ages 13-15)
In this fun acting class, students will discover the components of their instrument through play (imagination, voice, body, movement) and through this discovery will experiment with creating authentic and believable characters.
An actor’s instrument is comprised of their body, voice, imagination and movement. We will be using tools from the body and voice to build a believable character. Through the exploration of movement, breath, and vocal technique, we will discover the possibilities in which to build a character, with the actor using themselves only. Students will learn the different parts of their acting instrument and will use these parts to build a character. They will rely on their movement, body and voice to create a believable character. Students will learn that characters must be built through imaginative play, exploration and experimentation.
I have 7 years of experience as an actress in the Chicago theatre scene. I hold my Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre. Because of my training, I have been able to play many bold and vibrant characters that are also truthful and authentic. This class is based of off classes from my BFA curriculum, post graduate studies and real world experience.
Students need to bring a piece of text that is memorized. This could be anything from the first few lines of a monologue to a few lines of a poem to a bit of a song (if nothing else a nursery song will suffice). It need not be long, we might only use it a few times--just something for students to have if they find themselves needing some text rather than improvising in character. Anything is acceptable if it is appropriate. Additionally, students will need space to be able to move around.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will be using techniques from the books of Kristin Linklater, Jacques Lecoq and Patsy Rodenburg.
