Acting for Film, TV and Theater

In our acting lesson we'll learn to be storytellers using imagination and detective work to see what clues are offered on the page to see what story we are in. Then, we explore the many possibilities of our creativity using the script.

Class Experience

Whether you're a seasoned actor and are looking to find more nuances in your work and deepen the meaning in your performance or if you are just starting out and wondering where to even begin, I am happy to be your guide.

In our lessons, I hope to give you the tools to identify the clues that lay in your script/scene that inform you of what story the writer is hoping to tell. What are the questions we should be asking ourselves so that we can identify who we are playing? What creative and unique ideas can we bring to that character based on the clues we've observed? And, of course, how do we have FUN in telling the story whether it's a drama or comedy or both?

We'll start by getting to know more about your acting journey. I will adapt the lesson to meet your goals and needs so that we can work at the top of your creativity and see where we can expand to.

Typically we will have a warm-up to get our bodies, minds and mouths ready to be open and grounded for play - afterall, we are simply playing with imagination. I will often give "homework" to prepare for class and then we will work on that material for the lesson. Sometimes we will work "cold" with a script to see what we can excavate and create in a short matter of time as sometimes is the case.

What does "Working on the Material" look like?
- Asking and answering questions about the "Facts" of the text - the Who, What, When, Where etc.
- Who is my character? What is their point of view of the world? Of the other characters? Of the circumstance in the scene?
- What character relationships are present in the scene?
- What is the journey of this scene? AKA. What is the purpose of this scene in the grand story of the show?

We will read through the scene, play it out and I will give feedback and adjustments along the way.

Lastly, we will reflect on what we discovered with the material in our session and talk about future goals.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a classically trained actor in NYC. I have studied at the Lee Strasberg Institute in NYC (Method acting), Maggie Flanigan 2 year Meisner Conservatory as well as the 13 month Voice and Speech program with Shane Ann Younts director of Voice and Speech at NYC Tisch School of the Arts. I continue to train with Deborah Hedwall in her studio in NYC. I have lots of on-set experience having shot a number of national commercials including those for Campbell Soup, Dr. Scholls, and Captain Morgan. I have also Guest Starred on many shows such as CBS's Madam Secretary, Blue Bloods, NBC's Chicago Med and Netflix's Black Summer to name a few. I have a great understanding for the auditioning process both in room and self-tape so I am very familiar with those ups and downs as well.
