Troublesome Words: Humor Writing Class by Children's Book Writer

Free reign or free rein? Canvas or canvass? This small-group camp demystifies tricky words and punctuation that trip us up. We then find the humor in our mistakes and turn them into fun pieces of creative writing.

Class Experience

In this class, we examine some common English language mistakes that people make. Students then turn these errors into silly paragraphs to help them reinforce their learning. Each class, a different humor writing technique will be taught and dissected. In the final class, students will put everything together to create funny stories of their own.

Important: This is an interactive class. For safety and the best learning experience, students are expected to turn on their cameras.

Class 1: Unfortunate Misuses of Punctuation
A missing comma or period can prove disastrous. We will learn through some real life mistakes.

Class 2: One Word Is All It Takes
All you need is one wrong word to change the meaning of a sentence. Let's examine how similar-looking words can have completely different meanings.

Class 3: You Think You Know The Phrase
You can probably rattle these phrases off the tip of your tongue but can you write them correctly? Guaranteed to generate peals (not peels!) of laughter.

Class 4: Putting It All Together
In the final day, we will warm up with a writing game before attempting a longer humor piece. Learners get to share their writing in class with their classmates.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their punctuation and spelling, as well as take home tips on how to inject humor into their creative writing.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am the award-winning author of seven children’s books and an architecture book based in California, USA. Trained as an architect/designer, I used to design buildings and draw comics before devoting myself to writing. My first children’s book Little Cloud Wants Snow! has been translated to Korean and Mandarin, and is being used by schools in Texas to educate children about weather science.

My teaching philosophy is to inspire kids to be more creative, whether it is through writing, art, or a foreign language. I draw from my two decades of experience in the publishing industry--as a writer, editor, copyeditor, and journalist--to make learning fun and thought-provoking. My curriculums aren't the typical ones you find in English Language Arts classes, but are derived from all the creative writing workshops, books, conferences I've learned from through the years. I have been teaching children and teenagers writing for about three years but enjoy working with people from all backgrounds and cultures. I joined the Outschool platform in 2020 to bring my classes to a bigger and more diverse audience.

Similarly, I love learning and teaching languages. I am trilingual in English, Chinese Mandarin, Japanese and have lived in Singapore, China, Japan, the UK.
