8 live meetings
6 in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. 1-2 hours outside of class per week to complete class projects that we start during class.Assessment
Students will self-assess their work verbally with the teacher. We will focus on constructive criticism, how to self-assess, and being resilient in art-making.Class Experience
In this course, students will learn about the seven principles of design (rhythm/movement, unity, balance, contrast, emphasis, pattern, proportion). The principles of design are ways of organizing the elements of art and will help students to push their artwork to the next level with solid design choices. Pre-requisite: Elements of Art for Elementary or Middle Schoolers. Please contact Cara for approval based on other courses prior to registering. Each class will concentrate on one of the principles of design and a small project will be assigned to practice using that principle. We will discuss project instructions and expectations, then begin on each assignment together. Each week, students will complete their projects at home. At the beginning of the following class, students will present their project and there will be a class critique. The last session of the course is designated for completing and critiquing a culminating project. Homework will include work time on art projects and may include practicing art exercises to help with projects. Each project will be presented and discussed by the class group. **Class Policies: *All class times are approximate. Class length may vary due to student ability and class size. Classes are designed to be no longer than the time allotted. *Late/Missed Class Policy - All courses will begin on time as long as one learner is in the classroom. In the event that no students are in the classroom at the assigned class time, the teacher will leave a message on the discussion board and exit the classroom after 10 minutes. Class recordings are available upon request.

Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Design from UNC Charlotte
I am passionate about students learning the elements of art and principles of design in order to give them the proper framework for creating successful works of art. With this knowledge, students can then add their own personal style and ideas to make truly original works of art. The elements of art and principles of design help to give a more concrete approach to art-making which in turn, allows more students to feel successful making art. Any students planning to progress through any levels of art should have this knowledge.
I teach this course yearly at the summer camp that I hold at my art studio and students are thrilled with the work that they are able to complete during this course.
