Students will first hear excerpts from the classic story, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. They will then follow the 5 step engineering process in their attempts to construct the tallest truffula tree made from uncooked spaghetti noodles, playdoh, marshmallows, and cotton balls. First they will identify the challenge. Second they will brainstorm ideas for a solution. Third they will sketch their designs. Fourth they will build, evaluate, redesign, and rebuild their designs. Lastly they will share their results.
Learning Goals
Students will become familiar with the engineering process.
Students will identify flaws in their creations, and attempt to correct those flaws in the redesign step.
Students will ultimately find which building materials allow for the strongest design.
Students will also assess their own works and share their conclusions with the class.Other Details
Supply List
Printable worksheets will be provided in the classroom. Materials for our truffula trees: uncooked spaghetti noodles a container of playdoh a handful of marshmallows a cotton ball (pillow stuffing, yarn, or a tissue will due as a substitute) Optional: A marker for coloring the cotton, and a paper plate for a work surface

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I'm an avid reader, and an author.
I was never so surprised in all my life as when my son told me he "just wasn't into reading" and that he thought "writing was the worst part of school." I had to think quick before he missed out on all the magic that I knew was waiting for him within the pages of books.
And so family book club was born. And then books and friends, and soon my house was overflowing with reluctant readers bouncing up and down and waiting desperately to tell Miss Tammi all their favorite bits from last week's reading.
I have spent ten years coaxing children into eager readers and confident writers. I love to watch those smiles light up when they realize there is a whole hidden world inside of books. In that world they never need to try to fit in, or please other people. In that world they are welcomed, they are wanted, and they are inspired.Reviews
