Class Experience

In this class, we will start by discussing H.P. Lovecraft's creation of Cthulhu. The following questions will be answered:
1. Who is Cthulhu?
2. What is the "Cthulhu Mythos"?
3. How did the "Cthulhu Mythos" start & how did it grow?
4. What other gods and beings are a part of this mythos?
5. Where was the influence the "Cthulhu Mythos" seen, and where is it still seen today?

Students will likely recognize the influence of Lovecraft and the "Cthulhu Mythos" in some of their favorite books, television shows, movies, and video games. I will ask them to give examples and share their thoughts.

This class will start with a lecture and slides/videos, and it will end with a class discussion. No prior knowledge is required.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
There will be a brief discussion of racism due to the beliefs of H.P. Lovecraft himself. Also, one of the books (which has now been made into a TV series set to air in late summer 2020) that is part of the "Cthulhu Mythos" addresses racism and basically calls out Lovecraft (posthumously, of course) for his beliefs.
Supply List
Students may choose to bring a pen/pencil and paper if they would like to take notes. I will, however, be posting a PDF in the Classroom when the class is done. It will contain information on the "Cthulhu Mythos" and list some book/movie/television suggestions -- to be approved by parents/guardians before the learner reads/views.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in English from Southern New Hampshire University
I'm a certified teacher with seven years' experience in the public school system. Now I am in my sixteenth year of homeschooling. I have taught literature classes to students in public school classrooms, co-op classrooms, and to my own children. I have a special interest in Gothic & Sci-Fi Literature, and I've been reading the works of Lovecraft for several years. I love discussing the influence of Cthulhu and the "Cthulhu Mythos." I believe my passion for the topic will spark interest and engagement from the students.

I've previously taught Lovecraft classes, as well as other classes that involved heavy topics. All students will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings on the topic of Lovecraft's racism, but this will be only a brief section of the class. Our main focus is going to be on Cthulhu and the "Cthulhu Mythos."
