The CogAT assessment is used across the United States to identify gifted children. However, many children are not familiar with this test or its format, and are thus not identified appropriately. As a teacher of gifted & talented students, I see this situation occur every testing season. Therefore, before giving the CogAT assessment to my potential students, I walk students through the test and help them understand what they will be asked to do. Since beginning this practice of familiarizing students with the test 16 years ago, I have had great success in ensuring students that are truly gifted qualify for services. You're in luck -- because I am bringing my "Crash Course: The CogAT" from my classroom, into your homes. Throughout this course, I use high-engagement strategies while we learn about this tricky assessment. Games and activities are important for me to implement when learning this critical material! Class Schedule: Class 1 -- About the CogAT, test-taking tips, getting to know the CogAT format Class 2 -- Verbal Analogies Class 3 -- Verbal Classification Class 4 -- Sentence Completion Class 5 -- Figure Analogies Class 6 -- Figure Classification Class 7 -- Paper Folding Class 8 -- Number Puzzles Class 9 -- Number Analogies Class 10 -- Number Series

Teacher expertise and credentials
PLEASE NOTE: Due to a personal health issue, I am unable to teach Outschool classes at this time. I will update this message on/around 8.1.22, with the hopes that I can again teach. I appreciate your interest, and hope you understand.
Hello! My name is Annie, and I love being a lifelong learner. I earned my M.Ed. from the University of Washington, and am currently in the Transformational Leadership doctoral program at Arizona State University. Professionally, I have been a teacher since 2005 (those 16 years flew by!!) in grades 2-6. Most of my career has been spent teaching gifted students, who have a unique set of needs. Through all of my educational experiences, I have learned that education usually comes down to one thing: passion.
My goal in each of my classes, is for the student become passionate about the topic. I *loved* when my daughter would come home from school, and I would ask her what her favorite class was that day -- and each day, it was something different. If your child walks away wanting to know more about the class topic, I'm thrilled! In my classes, you will find active engagement strategies mixed in with core content learning. An Outschool class should be fun, of course, but the child should also walk away with new knowledge and/or inspiration.
Personally, I am a single mum of one 16-year-old gifted & ASD daughter. We laugh our way through life, and no matter where we go, we walk away with great memories. Traveling is important to me, and I have been to every continent except for Antarctica and Africa (although a trip is being planned for 2023!). When I am in town, during hockey season, you'll find me cheering on the Coyotes - I'm a season ticket holder. If I'm not at the arena, I'm spending time with friends & family.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you and your learner! Thank you for considering me to become a part of your journey.

Annie Powers
