Ever wonder what goes on before a pilot even leaves the ground? In this interactive course, you'll learn the art of safely taxiing to an active runway—an essential skill every future pilot needs to master. We’ll break down what it takes to communicate like a pro with air traffic control, navigate complicated airport diagrams, and recognize crucial taxiway and runway markings. By the end of this class, you’ll confidently taxi your virtual airplane to the runway, communicate with ATC like a seasoned pilot, and know exactly what all those lines, signs, and symbols on the tarmac mean. It’s all about mastering the details that lead to smooth, safe takeoffs! My teaching style is all about keeping things engaging and fun. We’ll start with short, interactive lectures to introduce the concepts, followed by games and discussions to reinforce what you’ve learned. I use slides, diagrams, real-world examples, and interactive quizzes to keep you on your toes. You’ll get to ask questions during discussions, practice ATC communications with your classmates, and test your knowledge through interactive games. We’ll learn together, making sure you’re confident before your next (virtual) takeoff!
Learning Goals

over 1 WeekLesson 1:
Understanding Taxi Diagrams and ATC Communications
Students will explore common elements of taxi diagrams, including runways, taxiways, aprons, and hot spots, and learn how to locate departure runways using FAA charts. They will walk through a real-world diagram focusing on intersections and hold-short locations. The lesson also covers ATC communication, key taxi instructions, and the importance of readbacks. Students will practice these skills with mock ATC clearances in a practical exercise.

Lesson 2:
Runway and Taxiway Markings and Signs
This lesson covers taxiway and runway markings, including centerlines, edge lines, and hold-short markings, while highlighting the differences between controlled and uncontrolled airports, non-movement areas, and hot spots. Students will also learn about airport signage (mandatory, location, direction, and distance signs) and how they aid in ground navigation. Runway incursion prevention strategies will be discussed, followed by a Q&A session to address any questions about markings and signs.

Lesson 3:
Practical Application Using a Flight Simulator
Students receive an overview of the flight sim software and a quick refresher on ATC communications, taxi diagrams, markings, and signs. They will taxi from the ramp to the runway in a prerecorded simulator video, following ATC instructions while applying their knowledge of taxi routes and signage. Real-time feedback is provided by the instructor. The session concludes with a debrief, discussing common issues, reviewing key takeaways, and addressing any remaining questions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and welcome!
I'm thrilled to join you on the Outschool platform as we embark on a journey of learning together. I hold a commercial pilot's license with an instrument rating (I can fly in the clouds!), as well as certified flight instructor (CFI) and advanced ground instructor (AGI) certifications.
Before pursuing my passion for aviation, I graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. I taught private guitar and composition lessons for several years, which gave me valuable experience working with students from elementary through high school.
As a lifelong learner, I’m fascinated by the science of how we learn, retain, and use information, and I incorporate these insights to create engaging, memorable lessons for all my students.
When I'm not flying or playing guitar, you’ll find me with my nose in a book on topics like astronomy and poetry, relaxing by the beach, or hanging out with my family. I can’t wait to share my love for aviation (and more) with you in class!
