Beginner Level
Humans have searched for the ability to fly since antiquity. Today we have mastered the ability to fly, yet it still remains an incredibly intricate task combining physics, engineering, meteorology, aerodynamics, and history. We will explore all of these concepts in this five-day class. We learn about airplanes and how they fly. We will study airplane parts and how engines work. We will get inside of the cockpit to learn about airplane controls. We will learn about the history and science of flight. We explore rockets and the Laws of Motion. We will complete a project or experiment during every class. Annette the Teacher is a Licensed Pilot and Ground School Instructor. Day 1: What is Flight? / We will build a NASA Mars Helicopter (Print out template prior to class) Day 2: Parts of an Airplane and How do Airplanes Fly / We will make a hooped glider Day 3: Airplane Controls / We will make a NASA Dart Paper Airplane (Print out template prior to class) Day 4: Airplane Engines & Rules of Flight / We will make a string powered cup glider Day 5: The Atmosphere & Rockets / We will make paper rockets Supplies for the daily projects. Please have the supplies ready prior to class. Day 1: Print out the NASA Mars Helicopter Template from the class page, safety scissors, tape Day 2: 1 plastic or paper disposable drinking straw (non-bendable, long), 1 sheet of construction paper (any color), clear tape, safety scissors Day 3: Printout of Classic Dart Plane Template from the class page, safety scissors, clear tape Day 4: 2 Disposable Styrofoam cups (You can use disposable plastic cups, but they will not work as well.), tape, 4 feet of string, safety scissors Day 5: 1 disposable drinking straw (non-bendable), 1 piece of paper, safety scissors, tape If your student has special needs, please contact Annette the Teacher prior to class so appropriate accommodations can be made.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Minors: Biology, Chemistry, and Writing
Hello. I am Annette the Teacher. I can't wait to teach you here on Outschool.
My educational philosophy is to foster the growth and knowledge of my students through personalized, project-based, and collaborative learning. I believe in nurturing every student's quest for knowledge through Activity-Based Learning. Learning should be fun. My classes are based on hands-on learning projects. In my classes, you get into the action with experiments, activities, projects, crafts, cooking, and more.
I have been teaching for many years. I have over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. I have a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. I have homeschooled my children from Pre-School through their High School graduations. All of my classes are interactive. I encourage students to fully participate in class. My classes feature hands-on activities, books, and worksheets I write for the class. No matter the subject, my classes get the students involved.
I have been working as a tutor for 10+ years.
I am a writer and artist. I use my extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. I enjoy teaching science, history, and art classes. I bring history alive with my "Big History ..." classes where students learn about key times in history through interactive lessons and projects. "Paint like ... Famous Artists" art classes where students learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. I know hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.
I also have experience working with Special Needs children. I am Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs and ADHD. If your child has special needs, please contact me so I can work with you and your child.
I can't wait to share my lifelong love of learning with you. There is so much knowledge out there, come and discover it with me!
I am a Licensed Pilot and a Licensed Ground School Instructor.
