Strategy a Week: Reading Comprehension Tutoring with a Certified Reading Specialist
In this ongoing class, students will participate in a shared reading experience and receive explicit instruction in a research-based comprehension strategy.

Want your child to improve their reading comprehension skills? Worried they do not enjoy reading because they cannot understand the text? Then this class is for them! In this ongoing, interactive course, students will meet with a certified reading specialist to listen to and interact with a high interest read aloud. With the text being read aloud, the focus can be taken off of fluency and placed on understanding. A comprehension strategy will be explicitly modeled and then practiced, so that there will be easy-to-follow steps to support their thinking. After each sessions, they'll have a new skill they can immediately implement into their own reading! Each class will have the following format: -Interactive Read Aloud -Explicit Reading Strategy Modeling -Guided Practice -Sharing Join for one or all of the classes your child would find interesting or helpful! The schedule is as follows: Week of September 5: Coding and Annotating the Text Week of September 12: Inferring Week of September 19: Finding the Main Idea Week of September 26: Summarizing Week of October 3: Coding and Annotating the Text Week of October 10: Inferring Week of October 17: Finding the Main Idea Week of October 24: Summarizing I hope to read with you soon!

I am passionate about instilling a love of reading in children through sharing engaging, high interest texts. The classes I teach are literacy based, and I also offer reading assessments to help parents have a better understanding of their child's reading level and strategies to support them.
I have ten years teaching experience at the elementary level and my Masters in Reading Education from UVA and am certified to teach readers from K-12. I ran the CETA (Changing Education through the Arts) program by the Kennedy Center, at my school and find great value in arts integration.
I believe children should feel that they are valued members of a class in order to do their best learning. Classes should be engaging, interactive and social, especially in a virtual format.
