In this four week course, children will explore various math concepts as we read a math themed book, play games, find patterns, and manipulate numbers and shapes. Each class will begin with a book read aloud with active discussion as I read. The book will allow young children to work with concepts that might otherwise be a bit intimidating for their age. We will take the math theme of the book and expand on it with games, manipulatives, poems, songs, or movement. We will have a "Good Guess!" estimation activity and a "Preposterous Problem" of the day in each class. This class is intended to supplement a child's regular math curriculum by challenging students to look at numbers in new ways. It will encourage a love of math as they see real life applications as we read stories using the concepts. I am not teaching mastery of math concepts. I will be exposing students to different ways numbers can be used and different ways of thinking about math. As students learn to think and use mathematical reasoning in every day situations, they are better able to transfer the knowledge to learning math skills with paper and pencil activities. Students in this class should be able to count to 20 and have an understanding of number concept. For example, they can count ten objects, in addition to saying numbers from 1 to 10. During each class period, we will discuss the "at home activity." Students will complete one activity per week outside of class. They will have a lapbook, which is a file folder with small graphic organizers attached to it, to review the class topics at the end of the 4 weeks. The topics for each class include: Class 1: Shapes All Around Us This class will look at everyday objects and learn all about their shapes. Class 2: What Does Equal Mean? This class will discuss the different ways that the word "equal" can be used. We can have equal numbers, equal lengths, and equal weights! Class 3: Fractions: Part 1 This class will discuss the concept of making a fraction and dividing wholes into fractions. Class 4: Fractions Part 2 This class will further discuss fractions and introduce the concept of equivalent fractions.
