US Grade Kindergarten
In this exciting and engaging math camp, Kindergarten students will learn to identify and compose 2D shapes and 3D shapes through fun activities and learning games. At the beginning of class, the students and teacher will have a discussion about the topic(s) of the week so the teacher can assess the students’ prior knowledge of the subject. Throughout the class, the teacher will introduce and teach the topic(s) using the “I Do, We Do, You Do” method. This instructional method starts with the teacher giving an example, followed by the teacher and student solving a problem or completing a task together, then finally, the student is given a problem or task to complete on his/her own, with support given as necessary. Here is the schedule for this math camp: Day 1: 2D Shapes - Students will learn about "flat shapes", such as the triangle, circle, rectangle, oval, and heart. The student and teacher will discuss the qualities and attributes of each. Students will practice identifying, sorting and drawing 2D shapes. Day 2: 3D Shapes - Students will learn about "solid shapes", such as the cone, cube, cylinder, pyramid, rectangular prism and sphere. The student and teacher will discuss the qualities and attributes of each. Students will practice identifying and sorting 3D Shapes. Students will observe 3D shapes in the real world, and they will be invited to share 3D shapes from their home. Day 3: Shape Composition - Students will review the names and attributes of 2D and 3D shapes. Students will complete a "hide the shapes" activity where they will have to hide the shapes from an evil frog! To complete this activity, the students must use several flat shapes to create other shapes. For example, use two triangles to "hide" a square, or two squares to "hide" a rectangle. At the end of this class, students will be invited to create pictures using tangram pieces (provided as a printable, or students can make their own!) Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, to help the students to relate to the lesson and to introduce each topic within the lesson. This class is best for any student ages 4 to 7, or those students looking to learn and practice 2D shapes, 3D shapes and shape composition. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class. The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom. Students may need to print materials prior to the start of class. Please check the parental guidance and materials sections.
