How to skateboard for beginners with a professional skateboarder!

This is a 6 week hands-on course where we will practice all of the basics of skateboarding to get you feeling confident about showing off your skills!

Throughout this course students will learn the basics of skateboarding including: Where you should put your feet, their stance, how to push, how to turn, and a few simple tricks to boost their confidence.

This course runs for 6 weeks and each week we will go over the steps to get students feeling comfortable and confident on a skateboard so when they go to a skatepark, both you and them will be feeling assured that they have the understanding of how to take it on.

My teaching style is casual, professional and inclusive. I aim for my classes to be interactive and fun for all learners. I prioritize student engagement by leaving times in my lessons for Q&A’s and student interaction.

Students are not required to have any prior skateboarding knowledge although to compete the course they will need to have a complete and functioning skateboard, a skateboard tool (or tools required for all nuts and bolts) as well as access to a camera to send in video & picture homework for weeks 2-6.

Note: If you currently do not have a complete skateboard or don't understand that terminology, please refer to my one-class introductory class to skateboarding to ensure that your child is set up for success.

Week 1:
Icebreaker! Let's talk about skateboarding styles, our favourite skateboards and what inspires us to skateboard. If you currently don't know your stance, we will learn how to find that in this class. In this class, the teacher will confirm what level the students are at (true beginner, or basic beginner).

Week 2:
We are talking about the following topics:
- Where should your feet go? (THIS could be the most important class!)
- How to push & how to turn

Homework: 2-3 simple tricks to practice (film one trick)

Week 3:
In this class, we will discuss how to maintain your skateboard, different skateboard shapes & wheels, and everything about trucks.

Homework: Practice and film 1 more trick as per the teacher's guidance

Week 4:
This class will be dedicated to providing our classmates positive feedback on their progress while reviewing homework. We will discuss different stances, how to ride ramps (pumping and riding switch) and a basic trick - KICKTURNS!

Homework (optional): Take a picture or video of local skatepark.

Week 5:
Skatepark etiquette is one of the most important things that a young skateboarder will learn about. The class will discuss the importance and safety of skatepark etiquette, making friends at the local park, and how to ride your local park (if you sent a photo in).

Homework: Take a video of yourself getting a trick or “line” at your local park. If this is not possible, media from your own backyard or driveway will suffice.

Week 6:
In this week, we will review our progress and host an ultimate Q&A about skateboarding. The students will give positive feedback to each other regarding their progressions and the teachers will give constructive pointers on how to improve.

Learning Goals

Upon completion of this course, students will have the confidence to practice their newfound abilities on a skateboard as well as understand how to ride their local skatepark and/or desired obstacles.
