Class Experience

This virtual, 1 on 1 class called "Sight Word Shuffle - Tutoring. Learn to read!" will help your child get started with reading. Sight words are an important step in the reading process. These pre-reading skills are often introduced before or in conjunction with phonics. This online course is great for pre-school, pre-k, kindergarten, first grade, or second grade. It's a great addition to any homeschool program for preschoolers and beyond. It is also beneficial to help prepare each learner for the early stages of reading by using sight word recognition.

We will learn about sight words based on your learner's needs.

In this fun-filled, one-on-one class, I will introduce and reinforce a variety of sight words through games and activities. We will spell, read, and write words to practice seeing them and knowing them by sight. These activities will help learners to recognize common words (word recognition) for their individual level. We can pull from the Dolch or Fry list of words.

Learners will have the opportunity to participate in engaging activities that stimulate their minds in a variety of ways. By the end of each class, students will be more familiar with 3-5 new words.

I will be using a variety of modalities to accommodate a variety of learning styles. For example, I will address auditory learning by speaking, visual by showing illustrations and demonstrating each concept or word, and kinesthetic by having students use hand motions to read and say words.

♦🔶♦ Note: Since the session topics are learner-directed, parents will need to contact the teacher 48 hours ahead of time, or as soon as possible, to specify which words or level you want your learner to work on. Otherwise, we will follow the schedule below.

PREREQUISITES:
♦ Learners will need to know all the letters and sounds of the alphabet prior to this class.

⭕ This is an ongoing course to help learners reinforce sight words. As such, learners can enroll and withdraw at any time. Students will not need to attend a previous class or continue classes to benefit from the course because the content for each class is independent of other classes.

🍎 On some occasions, learners will be encouraged to bring an item such as a printed file or a household item for a game. In such cases, this request will be posted in the classroom the day before class to allow time for preparation.

CLASS AGENDA:
3 minutes - Random draw word review
2 minutes - Review or q&a on using materials
5 minutes - Introduce words of the day (3-5 words, depending on difficulty)
10 minutes - Working with materials to see, write, spell, and find designated words.
5 minutes - Ending with optional share and/or game

SCHEDULE:
If parents do not have a specific request regarding what level or words they want the learner to work on, we will begin with the following basic words:
Week of April 18th: a, and, an, am, at, be, I, the, it
Week of May 2nd: big, blue, can, come, down,
Week of May 16th: find, for, funny, go, help
Week of May 23rd: here, in, is, me, away
Week of May 30th: jump, little, look, make, my
Week of June 6th: not, one, play, red, run
Week of June 13th: said, see, three, to, two
Week of June 20th: up, we, where, yellow, you

After these weeks, we will continue to add new words each week until June 23. Once we reach that point, we will cycle through the words again). Dates will be updated as necessary to help parents be informed of what words are being covered.

🔵 If the meeting time or date is not compatible with your schedule, please reach out to me to request a date & time that works for you.

🟠 If your learner needs extra accommodations, assistance, or support, please let me know at least 48 hours prior to the first meeting so that I have time to prepare any extra materials, teaching tools, or strategies that may be used for accommodations.

🟢 If you would like to enroll a child who is outside of the age limits of this class, please reach out to me to discuss it.

🟡 Learners are encouraged to keep their cameras turned on because it helps to improve the teacher's ability to meet the learners' needs.
Some of the benefits are:
~ I depend on visual cues to help learners distinguish between the pronunciation of similar letters, sounds, and words. Without that visual aid, I won't be able to see whether they are making the correct sounds for each letter or word. Some examples of similar letters and sounds are: “m” and “n.” Other examples are "p" and "t" or "d," "b," and "v," or "f" and "s.
~ I depend on visual cues to assess if the children are comprehending or whether I need to explain something a different way.
~ I depend on visual cues to help me determine whether I need to adjust the pacing, slow down, repeat, or move on.
~ Being able to see each learner's face helps me to understand what learners are saying, especially if they are not very loud, the audio is muffled, or they struggle to pronounce a word.
~ With some classes and learners, we may not have the benefit of using the chat feature to communicate because they may struggle to read or type.
~ Sometimes an activity or discussion requires that a learner raises their hand or perform a motion to participate. This visual cue may serve as a signal that the learner has a comment or question.

⭐ CLASSROOM RULES
1. Be prepared for class.
2. Always try your best and do your best work.
3. Raise your hand or use the Raise Hand feature to ask a question.

Hi,
Thank you for visiting my page!

I’m excited to get to know you and I hope to have your learner in one of my classes sometime soon!

I have an interest in a wide variety of topics and I like to learn about many things. My goal is to instill and foster that same desire to learn in the students that I work with. I have worked with children for over 15 years. Regardless of the age of the learner, I hope to make the lesson fun and intriguing.

The subjects that I teach vary widely, according to my many interests. Some of them include reading, math, language arts, circle time, science, history, geometry, dissection, tv broadcast, video production, dance, and forensics. I enjoy being able to connect lessons, subjects, and activities with a theme.

I have an MS in Curriculum and Instruction for Elementary Education. I earned and maintained my Professional Teaching License from 1998 - 2018. My area of endorsement was Elementary Grades 1-8. I love using those skills to create lesson plans that are engaging and stimulating.

When I teach, I use a variety of modalities to accommodate a variety of learning styles. In this way, I am able to address multiple learning styles such as auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. I try to engage as many of the senses as possible. I feel that student participation is an important component of learning that facilitates comprehension and interest.

In my free time, I like to watch movies, go on short hikes, dance, and sing. I pursue a gluten free lifestyle. So I like finding foods and recipes that fit into my pursuit of healthy meals and snacks.

I look forward to meeting your learner! I can’t wait to see what kind of discoveries we make together!
