Math in the real world usually looks like a word problem! That's why it's so important for kids to be able to understand them as well as solve them. However word problems are usually the most difficult for children to master! You need to be able to read accurately, understand the question asked with the information given, and then complete the proper math equation to solve. In this class we will practice solving math word problems that align with second grade Common Core standards. Problems types will include: Adding, Subtraction, and Multi-step Measurement and Data Geometry and Fraction Place Value & Number Sense These topics will integrated into each week with new problems! We will practice by doing any/all of • Retelling the word problem in their own words. • Telling the operation they will use and why they will use it. • Solve the problem. • Prove their answer makes sense. • Prove their answer is correct with a written explanation and/or model. Each class begins with a short "get to know you" question, a break down of the classroom rules, as many word problems as we can work through (depends on the difficulty of the problem) and a fun math game to practice our skills at the end!
Learning Goals
Students will think critically about math word problems.
