Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
In this one-time class, your student will extract the DNA from a strawberry. Students will learn where DNA is found in the cell body and remove it from the cell.

This lab will help your student expand their understanding of DNA. It is a perfect complement to "What is DNA?"

Materials
- Rubbing alcohol 1/2 cup
***Place in the freezer before class! It needs to be cold!***
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/3 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid
- 2 glass cups
- small strainer or funnel with cheesecloth
- 1 to 3 strawberries
- 1 plastic sandwich bag
- 1 fork or toothpick

Extraction Liquid
Mix one-half teaspoon of salt, one-third cup of water, and one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid in a glass.
Learning Goals
In this class, students will learn where DNA can be found, its function, and its structure. They will also learn about cells and how DNA directs and regulates the body. They will describe that the basic DNA structure is the same for all living organisms and realize that the DNA of a strawberry looks the same as that of a human, animal, plant, fungus, or bacteria.
