Join us for an intensive 6-week Chemistry study course designed to deepen your understanding of key concepts and prepare you for success on the AP exam. Each week will focus on a different aspect of chemistry, building a solid foundation in the fundamentals while exploring more advanced topics. Summer 2024 Dates Listed ⭐Week 1: Atomic Structure (June 24 - 28) - Explore atomic structure, including subatomic particles, atomic number, mass number, and isotopes. - Study the periodic table, its organization, and trends in atomic size, ionization energy, and electron affinity. ⭐Week 2: Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure (July 1 - 5) - Learn about the different types of chemical bonds: ionic, covalent, and metallic. - Understand Lewis structures and the VSEPR theory. - Explore molecular geometry and polarity. ⭐Week 3: Chemical Reactions and Stoichiometry (July 8 - 12) - Practice balancing chemical equations - Study the different types of chemical reactions: synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion. - Master stoichiometry, including the mole concept, molar mass, limiting reactants, and percent yield. ⭐Week 4: Thermochemistry and Gases (July 15 - 19) - Explore energy changes in chemical reactions, including endothermic and exothermic reactions. - Learn about heat capacity, specific heat, and calorimetry - Study the gas laws: Boyle's law, Charles's law, Avogadro's law, and the ideal gas law. ⭐Week 5: Chemical Kinetics and Equilibrium (July 22 - 26) - Understand rate laws and reaction mechanisms. - Explore the factors affecting reaction rates: temperature, concentration, and catalysts. - Study chemical equilibrium, including the equilibrium constant and Le Chatelier's principle ⭐Week 6: Acids and Bases, Electrochemistry, and Review (July 29 - August 2) - Learn about acid-base theories: Arrhenius, Bronsted-Lowry, and Lewis - Practice pH and pOH calculations and acid-base titrations. - Explore electrochemistry, including redox reactions, electrochemical cells, and Faraday's laws. Each week, students will receive a packet for notes and practice questions for the unit. I will include sites for additional information and resources. Join us for a rigorous and engaging six-week course that will prepare you for success in AP Chemistry. Let's embark on this educational journey together and maximize your summer!
Learning Goals
Atomic Structure and Properties:
Big Idea 1: The chemical elements are fundamental building materials of matter, and all matter can be understood in terms of arrangements of atoms.
Big Idea 2: Chemical and physical properties of materials can be explained by the structure and the arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules, and the forces between them.
Molecular and Ionic Composition:
Big Idea 3: The formation of bonds between atoms is accompanied by changes in the energy of the interacting particles and the surrounding environment.
Big Idea 4: Chemical reactions can be described by reaction mechanisms and the conservation of atoms.
Intermolecular Forces and Properties:
Big Idea 5: The laws of thermodynamics describe the essential role of energy and explain and predict the direction of changes in matter.
Big Idea 6: Any bond or intermolecular attraction that can be formed can be broken. These two processes are in a dynamic competition, sensitive to initial conditions and external perturbations.
Chemical Reactions:
Big Idea 7: The behavior of matter undergoing chemical change is described by the laws of thermodynamics and quantum mechanics.
Kinetics:
Big Idea 8: The changes that occur in the chemical composition of matter are represented by balanced chemical equations.
Big Idea 9: The structure and shapes of molecules and ions can be predicted from their Lewis structures and VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) theory.
Thermodynamics:
Big Idea 10: Properties of solutions can be interpreted in terms of the interactions between solute and solvent molecules.
Big Idea 11: Rates of chemical reactions are determined by details of the molecular collisions.
