Class Experience

This is the continuing class from Say Hello to Hindi! 2B. If you have not taken 2B, you must contact the instructor prior to enrollment!

Instruction will be provided via powerpoint imagery and props as well as through presentation, conversation, songs, and occasional youtube videos and games as appropriate.

Students are required to have the Meri Pratham Hindi Sulekh Boxset by Wonder House Books. Students will be provided with at least one new short story to be printed out for use in class. Students will also still need 1 notebook (preferably one that is 3 or more lined) to use as a journal and to write additional words and sentences in. Students will also need a small white board and marker with eraser.

Week 1: Review of 2B topics (numbers, calendar, habitual activities, command forms, word building, numerical gender differentiated counting)
Week 2: Continued review of 2B topics, introduction of numbers 32-40, times of day, new short story to practice command forms.

Weeks 3-11: Introduction and practice (through conversation, show and tell type activities, ppt as well as journaling) the topics of weather, the simple past, the continuous, and adjectives (variable & invariable). Journaling assignments will be given to practice all the aforementioned topics as appropriate per student progress. Introduction and practice of new vocabulary and words using vowel matras as well as conjuncts. Possible addition of a story depending on progress. Numbers 41-50

Week 12: Review of topics covered in weeks 3-11.

Topics covered will be based on overall student progress. The goal of the class is to ensure learners can reproduce what they learn, topics covered could be less if majority of students need more production practice.

Learning Goals

The goal of the class is to ensure learners can reproduce what they learn: being able to tell how and where they were yesterday, what they do regularly, what they are doing after class/tomorrow/next week, describe objects and people accurately using simple adjectives and to do so at a beginner level in writing as well. Counting up to 50 and telling about the weather and time of day.

Topics covered could be less if majority of students need more production practice.

Parental Guidance
In order to use Jamboard a google account will be needed during class. Students may use a parent's account. This is strictly for the use of Jamboard and not for students to communicate with each other. Jamboard requires a google account and does gather PII (Personal Identifiable Information). A regular Gmail account does require that the user must be 13-years-old or older so parents are requested to monitor students use of Jamboard.
Supply List
One (3 or more lined) notebook and pencil and eraser should be on hand for the class.
I also recommend an additional folder to help your child keep track of any extra printed materials. Any provided printouts should be printed prior to class.
Students will also need a small white board and marker with eraser.
All students are required to purchase Meri Pratham Hindi Sulekh Boxset by Wonder House Books as well.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I began studying Hindi in 2007 with a private tutor and continued to study Hindi at Indiana University as part of my India Studies degree. I have spent approximately 10 months in India at various times and places living with locals and honing my language skills. I tutored Hindi in 2019 and have been teaching Hindi at the TN Language Center since January 2020. In addition, I am a Kathak dance student and have been learning Kathak at Upasana Performing Arts Center, Nashville, TN over the past 11 years. I have also been a part of my dance school’s South Asian community since I began dancing Kathak and therefore have been able to gain additional cultural and historical comprehension as regards both Hindi/Urdu and South Asia.

I have worked in Montessori classrooms as well as more traditional classrooms working with young children as well as teens. I bring my TEFL training as well as my experience teaching English as a foreign language to all my language classes. Additionally, having been a foreign language student myself I know the challenges that many learners face in acquiring a new language and seek to make new concepts-grammar, vocab, phonics-as accessible and as comprehensible as possible through various means-media, powerpoint, activities, drills-by whatever means possible! I love learning new things everyday and hope that my classes would pass along not only knowledge but the attitude that knowledge and learning are valuable and exciting!
