What if you were told that you could make a fortune just by pushing a button on a box? But pressing this button will cause the death of someone somewhere in the world . . . someone you did not know. Would you push the button? Students will read and comprehend Matheson's tale of greed and temptation. Learners will discuss the story and discuss why this plot is timeless. Literary elements such as foreshadowing and irony will be highlighted. This class is scheduled for one hour, but the time may be extended based on the pace of the reading. It is important to me that students walk away confident in what they have learned. For this reason, I will not rush the students during the learning process. I also provide a worksheet with links that extend the learning process beyond the classroom.

Richard Matheson's "Button, Button" offers a seemingly simple yet deeply unsettling premise: a mysterious stranger presents a couple with a button that promises wealth at the cost of a stranger's life. In our interactive 1:1 online class, we'll delve into the psychological suspense, the moral tightrope the characters walk, and the shocking twist that redefines everything. We'll analyze how Matheson uses carefully crafted dialogue and vivid imagery to build tension and foreshadow the devastating outcome.
Together, we'll explore the story's enduring relevance, its commentary on human nature, and the chilling consequences of unchecked desire. You'll gain a deeper understanding of literary elements like irony and foreshadowing and develop your critical thinking skills as we discuss the characters' choices and the story's ultimate meaning.
Our learning goals include: comprehending the plot, analyzing character motivations, identifying and explaining foreshadowing and irony, discussing the story's timeless themes, and formulating your own interpretations.
