In this one time class, the learners will read and discuss a classic crime story. Students will learn about the crime genre, unexpected plot twists, and irony. The class will analyze the actions of Mary Maloney and will determine if she is guilty of a crime. We will question how the reader is meant to feel towards the main character and her actions. Students will improve their understanding of the crime genre, irony, and plot twists. Students will consider how the author wants the reader to feel about the main character. They will analyze the story to see how Dahl can make the reader care about a character that commits murder. The class will discuss: Who was the murderer? Are they guilty, or could they plea temporary insanity? What was their motive? Does the suspect have an alibi? Did the killer use the perfect weapon? The teacher will also highlight literary techniques employed by the author during the interactive reading of the text.
I am certified to teach ELA in the state of New Jersey to grades K-12. I have taught middle school english for over ten years. I have additional certifications to teach both middle and high school english. I have taught this story for many years, and my students always enjoy this lesson.

The main character in this story commits murder. She is pregnant and her husband plans to leave her. This content is mature, but is not graphic.
