** Coupon for a FREE class for a July 4-8th. CODE: NEWTO4I4UZ40 ** Students will study the concept of reliance: what it is, why it is essential, and how they can improve their resilience. The journal “I’m Resilient” is the core curriculum used for the course. The author of the book is the instructor for this course. The students will work with the author to complete activities, analyze for a deeper understanding of aspects of resilience, and listen and learn from expert speakers on the topic. How is the class structured? Before a class, students will receive an assignment from the book to complete. Then, during a live session, students will work on one to two book sections. They will also connect to and deepen their understanding of critical concepts related to resilience, listen to speakers on related topics, and participate in group discussions. Time is provided in class each session for self-reflection, sharing (within the bounds of privacy standards set by Outschool), and asking questions. Students are not required to share their reflections or “aha” moments if they are uncomfortable doing so. Each class ends with a self-affirmation mantra about resilience. Course Breakdown NOTE: Each class begins with a reminder about privacy requirements. Students are not allowed to exchange or share personal information. Session 1: We will define what resilience and a mantra are. A lesson will center on how humans can cause themselves to fail at their dreams. The instructor will also introduce students to the class mantra. The speaker during this session focuses on positive thinking. Session 2: Students will identify some other their value gifts, some obvious and some less so. They’ll then consider how superficial beliefs by others might affect their views of themselves. The speaker during this session focuses on owning one’s flaws and discovering that each individual has the power to control things related to their lives despite others’ potentially harmful views. Session 3: This session is all about balance. Students will think of traits they possess that might be challenges they face when trying to achieve a specific goal. They will also consider what qualities they have to help them overcome these challenges. The speaker in this class is a teenager that speaks from personal experience about what it takes to be resilient. Session 4: The final session discusses how negative experiences can help build resilience and empower you. The speaker of this session discusses the quality that people who come from different backgrounds who become successful possess. Students will think about what negative experiences they have experienced and focus on the potential positive outcome. What is your teaching style for this? How much will they interact? How will you teach? After being given optional time to share any assignments completed outside class, students will receive a short piece of direct instruction on the week’s topic. In addition, students will complete activities in their journals during class time. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss and speak during each session. The speaker portion of the class will be done by a shared video, with accompanying discussion questions to inspire conversation. The instructor does not hurry through lessons. If students need more time to complete an assignment, they’ll be allowed to take the time necessary. Any required experience or knowledge learners need? No required experience is required. However, this class will best benefit students who enjoy actively participating in lessons.

The speakers were all selected through TedTalk. None dwells on their experiences and challenges. However, they are mentioned or referenced for context in why and how the speakers have built resilience. Speakers faced severe medical illnesses, accidents, death, family members’ illegal activities, bullying, and incarceration. Some discuss feelings of helplessness or worthlessness. Yet, all of the speakers over overcame these challenges.
