US Grade 2
This class covers in-depth the second grade common core standards, with multiple weeks focusing on strengthening the understanding of each second-grade standard. The same concepts of addition and subtraction are used through out the year to build concrete understanding of addition and subtraction to 1,000 using multiple strategies. Place Value - 8 AM Tuesday/ Thursday -How to read and write numbers up to three digits -Learn to visualize numbers up to 1,000 -Skip count by 2's,5's, 10's and 100's -four ways to write a number - (Standard form, expanded form, base ten form, written form) -how to compare numbers using ><= signs -ordering numbers least to greatest and greatest to least - skip counting up and down starting at any number Addition -4PM Monday / Wednesday - Start building fluency to 20 - Use base ten, and place value to understand addition - learn multiple addition strategies -mentally add 10/100 to a number Subtraction -Start building fluency to 20 -Use base ten, and place value to understand subtraction -learn multiple subtraction strategies -mentally subtract 10/100 to a number Students will be exposed to the following standards: (Some of these standards run year long and will not be mastered during the first 8 weeks) CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1 Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. Understand the following as special cases: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1.A 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens — called a "hundred." CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1.B The numbers 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine hundreds (and 0 tens and 0 ones). CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.2 Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.3 Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.4 Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.6 Add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and properties of operations. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.8 Mentally add 10 or 100 to a given number 100-900, and mentally subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100-900. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.9 Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations. My classes are game-based so that learners can stay engaged with their learning. There will be visuals to go along with each lesson, in the form of a whiteboard, or powerpoint. I will also use video clips during lessons, and songs to help students stay engaged in their learning. Each week parents will also receive a packet of materials that will be used during the week for instruction. Students should have access to a printer to print materials, and access to some type of counter. This could be coins, blocks, buttons or a math manipulative counter such as unifix cubes, base ten blocks, or pattern blocks. Weeks 1-3 Focus will be on place value. Including 10 more 10 less, 100 more 100 less. And adding with expanded form. Weeks 4-6 Addition using different strategies. Addition with carrying. Addition up to 3 digit numbers. Weeks 7-8 Subtraction using different strategies. Subtraction with borrowing. Subtraction across zeros. Subtraction of up to 3 digit numbers.
Learning Goals
Students will develop their understanding of place value, addition, subtraction, time, money shapes, fractions, repeated addition, and problem solving.

Hello!
My name is Jamie Nelsen, I am currently a reading coach and interventionist at an International School. I have taught students from pre-k (age 4) to 5th grade full time in the classroom, as a homeroom teacher. I am my 9th year of full time teaching, and I have also worked as a substitute teacher in Orlando Florida for 2 years. The past 9 years I have been working in international schools around the world, I have experience with both the Common Core and the British National Curriculum.
I love traveling the world and teaching internationally allows me to do this. I work with students to develop their independence and ability to learn skills by thinking through problems instead of asking for help. I believe that every child needs to be given the skills that they need to be successful, which include learning how to learn so that they can discover their own interests and learn more about it in a powerful, meaningful way, that will encourage lifelong learning!
I recently finished my Master's degree in Educational Technology and I am passionate about technology integration into learning!
