In this 4-week course, students will read historical fiction and discuss the books in a book club type setting.

Class Experience

Class Experience
Students will learn in a combination of discussion board usage and well as live discussion of the book.  The teacher will interact through both forums.  The topics covered will be the following books:  I Survived The Great Chicago Fire, 1871; I Survived The Shark Attacks of 1916; I survived The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941; and I Survived The Nazi Invasion, 1944.

Students will learn not only the content of the historical fiction, they will also learn how to analyze books and discuss books in a group setting.

I am an English major, and I have always loved historical fiction.  I am a huge fan of Lauren Tarshis, and I believe she writes well about history so children can learn to enjoy historical fiction as well.

The homework for each week will be to read the selected book for the week and be ready for group discussion. Expected time outside of class to prepare is around 2-4 hours a week.

The parents will need to purchase the books from the I Survived series or borrow them from the library.

45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
