Beginner - Intermediate Level
Class Description: Reading Fluency for Young Learners This ongoing class is designed to help students develop essential reading fluency skills, including accuracy, decoding, expression, pacing, and comprehension. Using a combination of fiction and nonfiction texts, students will engage in structured practice to build confidence and proficiency in reading aloud. What Will Be Taught? Students will learn research-based strategies to improve their reading fluency, including: Decoding and phonics skills to read unfamiliar words with ease Sight word recognition to enhance automaticity Expressive reading techniques (prosody) to improve tone, rhythm, and pacing Strategies for adjusting reading speed for better comprehension How fluency supports understanding and retention of text Course Structure & Topics Covered: Each class follows a structured format, but since it is an ongoing course, students can join at any time and continue learning at their own pace. Weekly lessons rotate through essential fluency skills, including: Decoding and word recognition Pacing and smooth reading Expression and phrasing Comprehension and fluency integration Fluency with nonfiction vs. fiction texts Teaching Methods & Style: My teaching style is structured, interactive, and supportive, ensuring all students receive individualized feedback. Lessons are designed to be engaging and multisensory, incorporating: Guided reading practice with age-appropriate texts Games and interactive activities to reinforce fluency skills Slides and visuals to support phonics and comprehension strategies Video clips and model readings to demonstrate expressive reading Discussions and participation to encourage active learning Student Interaction & Engagement: This course is highly interactive, with live reading practice, direct feedback, and engaging activities to keep students motivated. Students will participate in: Guided reading exercises each session Fluency-building games and challenges Small group discussions and peer practice Opportunities for individualized feedback and support Because this is a continuous class, students can stay enrolled for as long as needed, building fluency at their own pace while gaining confidence in their reading skills.
Learning Goals
Strengthen Decoding and Sight Word Recognition – Students will practice phonics-based strategies to decode unfamiliar words and increase automatic recognition of high-frequency words, supporting overall reading proficiency.
Develop Reading Fluency – Students will improve their ability to read smoothly, accurately, and with appropriate pacing, helping them build confidence in oral reading.

I am a certified educator with extensive experience in teaching reading fluency and literacy skills to young learners. I hold a Texas Teaching Certification in Early Childhood – 6th Grade, 4th – 8th Grade All Subjects, and a Science of Teaching Reading (STR) certification. Additionally, I have a bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences, which provides me with a strong background in language development, phonemic awareness, and reading fluency strategies.
Throughout my teaching career, I have worked with Pre-K, elementary, and middle school students in both classroom and small-group settings. My experience includes:
Teaching English Language Arts with a focus on reading fluency, phonics, and comprehension.
Supporting students with diverse learning needs, including those with dyslexia, ADHD, and language processing difficulties.
Providing individualized instruction and intervention for struggling readers.
Coaching and training other educators in best practices for reading instruction and fluency development.
My approach is structured, engaging, and research-based, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to develop fluency, confidence, and a love for reading.
