US Grade 3 - 5
Children will be taught to use comprehension strategies including: making connections to a text, relating background knowledge, making inferences, comparing and contrasting, summarizing, synthesizing, problem-solving, distinguishing between fact and opinion, finding the main idea, and supporting details. Sessions will be taught with a Balanced Literacy approach using the following teaching strategies: *Teacher modeling- or showing kids what a reader does when reading a text, thinking aloud about the mental processes used to construct meaning while reading a book aloud to the class. *Active Engagement- during the mini-lesson; students try the work they were shown by the teacher. *Independent practice- where children begin to work alone while reading books by themselves. *Application- is achieved when the students can correctly apply comprehension strategies to different kinds of texts. This approach, will help students develop reading and writing skills through a combined balanced literacy.
Learning Goals
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as
necessary.

Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from University of Central Florida
I graduated from UCF with a Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education (k-6). My teaching experience has been in both, upper elementary(3-5) and primary elementary(k-2). I have taught ELA (reading and writing), math, science, and social studies in self-contained classrooms for 13 years.
I spent a great deal of time teaching in failing schools, many on the lowest 300 performing schools in the state. My positions at these schools, included teaching all ESOL students and providing LLI to students who scored in the bottom 25% percentile. Many of these schools were able to get of the bottom 300 lists within 3 years of being hired.
