Homework
2-4 hours per week. Students will get the most out of this course by completing each week’s lessons and incorporating the techniques into their storytelling. Bringing completed homework to class allows for meaningful discussion, feedback, and refinement, helping students fully develop their scenes. Consistent engagement with assignments will greatly enhance their understanding and application of the concepts covered.
Assessment
We will criticque work as we go, constantly tweaking and enhancing character sketches.

In this advanced course, students will learn how to create visually compelling scenes that bring their stories to life. Focusing on key visual art fundamentals—composition, focus, balance, lighting, and color—students will explore how to use these tools to enhance storytelling and create professional-level illustrations. This class is perfect for aspiring illustrators looking to strengthen their storytelling skills and polish their portfolios.

Prerequisite Requirement:
To ensure success, students must have completed the first three courses in the "Publish Your Book" series or receive approval from the instructor to enroll directly. Additionally, a working manuscript is required, as all assignments will relate directly to the student’s own story.

What will be taught?
Students will gain advanced skills in:
Scene composition
Using lighting and color to enhance mood, drama, and storytelling.

The class will cover essential artistic concepts such as:
Composition, creating visual focus, maintaining balance,
lighting and color theory, among other key principles.

How is your class structured?
This is a 6 week course broken into weekly lessons, each building on the last.

Each week includes interactive demonstrations, group critiques, and individual assignments designed to align with each student’s manuscript.

How will you teach?
The class combines interactive live sessions, step-by-step demonstrations, and personalized feedback. Students will analyze professional examples, participate in group critiques, and complete weekly assignments that are directly tied to their working manuscripts.

Essential Supplies:

Working Manuscript:

A story or manuscript to base your illustrations on.
Sketching Supplies (choose digital or traditional, or a mix):

Digital Sketching:

A tablet with a stylus (e.g., iPad with Apple Pencil or similar).
Drawing app such as Procreate, Adobe Fresco, Clip Studio Paint, or similar.
Access to cloud storage or a file-sharing app to upload and share work (e.g., Google Drive).

Traditional Sketching:

Sketchbook (recommended size: 8.5" x 11" or larger).
Pencils (HB, 2B, 4B recommended).
Eraser (kneaded or standard).
Fine-tip pens or markers for inking (optional).
Colored pencils, markers, or watercolors for adding color (optional).

Lighting and Color Reference Tools:

Access to a scanner or a camera to digitize traditional sketches for sharing.
A way to upload completed assignments to class (photo or scanned file).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
