Students will: -generate ideas for writing to respond to writing prompts -organize ideas for writing to respond to writing prompts -write strong leads to introduce their ideas to respond to writing prompts -write strong transitions to connect their leads to the body sections of their written response -writing strong endings to conclude their ideas within their written response -use appropriate language conventions (i.e. grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation) -revise their ideas to strengthen their voice within their written response -edit their written response for language conventions -write narrative, informative, and opinion compositions
I have over 10 years of experience working with learners with various disabilities that impact their writing skills as a licensed special education teacher. Additionally, I have been an avid writer for 20 years winning a few competitions related to narrative writing and poetry. Additionally, I am a licensed educator and professional development specialist on addressing different social-emotional themes within written expression.
Homework Offered
Students will have weekly homework where learners will complete written compositions they began in class. Homework should take no more than 2-3 hours per week. The student will be assessed using a writing rubric they will have access to in order to meet the assignment's requirements.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be assessed using writing rubrics based upon the genre they use for their writing prompt. The teacher will add comments to their compositions using Google Docs to provide recommendations for students to strengthen their writing. Results from the rubric-based assignments will be shared with parents/caregivers via a message with suggestions on how to improve their writing on a bi-weekly basis.Grades Offered
This class is designed for learners with ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Autism. Learners will receive scaffolded instruction at a rate that is manageable for each learners' specific needs.
This class is designed for learners who can recognize the letters and each letter's individual sounds.

Since this class allows students to write about authentic experiences. this means they may bring up personal information that may be sensitive to themselves. No need to worry because I have over 10 years of experience working with students who write about their personal experiences to express themselves within the framework of the curriculum. Additionally, learners will take stretch breaks to maintain focus and attention. These stretch breaks will include: standing, kneeling, jumping, swinging arms, and basic stretches. Please let the teacher know if your child has any physical needs that must be considered during stretch breaks.
The rubrics and writing tools used are from Lucy Calkin's text: Writing Pathways: Performance Assessments and Learning Progressions (K-8). Also, online interactive graphic organizers are made by NCTE's Read.Write.Think's website.
