Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Welcome to my class everyone!

This one to one tutoring is designed to help all students develop a love of reading and begin to feel confident in their abilities to understand the text fully. It will include a mixture of games, learning and practice, starting from where your child is at.

Every lesson will begin with an introduction to this week's reading focus. There will be a warm-up activity to get us started followed by us concentrating on this one area in particular. Every session will end with a quick game to finish off on a positive note. The session will include slides, games, questions and discussions with me. It will include a chance to interact on the screen and paper and pencil can also be used if preferred.

Some of the areas we can cover in reading:
- Clarify the meanings of vocabulary in context,
- Answer retrieval questions about fiction and non fiction texts,
- Summarize the main ideas within one or more paragraphs,
- Make inferences about what we have read and justify our ideas with evidence,
- Predict what might happen next, giving reasons,
- Make comparisons within the text,
- Discuss the author's choice of language and how this adds to the meaning.

The first session will be a time where I can get to know your child and see what their reading ability is like. Each session will cover at least one of the different topics through a quick recap, more intense learning time and some consolidation. I would plan your lessons weekly so that we can move at the pace your child needs and make sure they are secure in their understanding before moving on. They might also request something they are struggling with at school or need some extra support with their homework.

My aim is to fit as much English into a small time frame with short, snappy tasks that will be fun and provide a challenge - therefore, leaving your child with a real sense of achievement.

We can meet 1-2 times per week depending on your schedule.

I look forward to seeing you.

Hello everyone,

My name is Heather and I am based in the United Kingdom where I have been teaching children aged 4-11 for 20 years. From a very young age, I wanted to be a teacher and my passion for this profession has kept on growing every day.

I love seeing (and being a part of) children grasping new concepts and becoming more confident in their own abilities. Every child is talented and I thoroughly enjoy finding out what they are passionate about and what it is they have a real flair for. I have a great enthusiasm for Maths, reading and writing and specialised in these subjects over the last 20 years. I also believe that children who are confident and feel valued and respected will believe in themselves so that they can achieve whatever they want! Every child deserves to be heard and to be able to develop the tools needed to become a lifelong learner.

My classes will always be well-prepared, pacey, fun and engaging. Learning will be completely suited to meet the needs and interests of the children.

I remember a quote I once heard that said:
"The best teachers are those who tell you where to look but don't tell you what to see."

Young children are so curious about the world around them and always ask "Why?" I try every day to nurture and develop this inquisitiveness by making sure learning is an enjoyable experience and by being a fantastic role model. It is important to tell our children that we, ourselves, are still learners. My role is not to tell children constantly what to do but to be able to help them facilitate their own learning through scaffolding and practise.

The thing that brings me most joy is making other people happy and to hear them laugh. I have a weird fascination with dad jokes. My friends say that they don't find my jokes funny but I know they secretly do - especially once I have explained these and repeated them several times ;)
