Class Experience

US Grade 6
Students will look into sixth grade math topics that students will review or a preview of next academic school year. Classes are designed to help students improve and reinforce their math skills while having fun. Students will be assessed on the first day of class to ensure they are in the appropriate math level. Topics and level of difficulty will be adjusted for each grade level class.

The following are the concepts that we will focus on each week (remember, there are 2 classes each week so we will make sure to dive into these topics thoroughly):

Week 1: Area and Surface Area
Week 2: Introducing Ratios
Week 3: Unit Rates and Percentages
Week 4:Dividing Fractions
Week 5:Decimal Arithmetic
Week 6: Expressions and Equations

Class format:

First, 10 minutes: Warm up for each class students will participate in.

Second, 15 minutes: Introduction of new content. There are 6 session topics that build on each other. Please see the schedule above.

Final, 5 minutes: Exit Ticket. The exit ticket will be differentiated by a game or problem set.
Learning Goals
Focus Standards

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.1
Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.2
Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.A.1
Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.1
Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.2.A
Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers.
