50 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
Each week, I will expose students to a type of poetry. I will teach students the format, rhyme scheme (if any), and number of lines/syllables, as well as any other features/requirements. Students will then analyze examples and discuss each one, expressing their opinions on the poet's writing style and tone. Finally, students will use the mentor texts to help them craft their own poem. The class will end with students presenting their poems and receiving feedback from their peers (if they wish). The upcoming schedule is as follows: January 17 -- Ode (students will need a piece of fruit for this class) January 24 -- Haiku and Cinquain January 31 -- Black-out Poem (student will need a random torn-out page from an old novel and a black Sharpie) February 7 -- Villanelle February 14 -- Concrete Poem My teaching style is very inclusive; I offer time for students to express their ideas and to interact with their peers. My goal is to inspire students to find their writing voices and to craft beautiful poetry.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to analyze different types of poetry for style and literary elements and will practice writing their own poetry.
