In this 5-week complete unit, students will learn introductory skills to understanding poetry by practicing their ability to deeply analyze, think abstractly, understand elements like meter, and be introduced to sonnets and limericks

Class experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Beginner Level
- Students will have a well-rounded understanding of poetry as a whole and feel confident to read and comprehend it

- Students will learn how to differentiate four kinds of figurative language (metaphor, simile, symbol and hyperbole), the basic elements of poetry form (stanzas and lines), and practice skills necessary to both analysis and life in general (humility, patience, confidence, seeking understanding, self-reflection, challenging oneself)

- Students will use the class text (How Happy is the Little Stone by Emily Dickinson) to learn about the stressed, unstressed, and secondary stresses within words and how to identify them. They will also learn about the four metrical feet of poetry (iamb, trochee, dactyl, and anapest) and how to identify them within poems.

- Students will use the class text (Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare) to learn about the key elements of a sonnet including lines, rhyme-scheme, syllables, and meter. They will also be challenged to comprehend a beginners understanding of the central-text itself.

- Students will use limericks to learn about their key elements and structure including tone, lines, rhyme-scheme, and meter.
