GRADING • Students will receive a percentage (0-100) for the activities each week, and then an overall percentage (0-100) at the completion of the course. Percentage will show their accuracy in answering questions with the correct answers. • A letter-grade does not get applied (feel free to look up your local school district's grading scale if you wish to know a letter-grade) ‣ Lesson participation = 10% of final grade ‣ Weekly quizzes = 35% of final grade ‣ Practice Poems = 35% of final grade ‣ Final quiz = 20% of final grade

CLASS SYNOPSIS 
    • This 5 week course collects all five of my other (5⭐️) poetry courses into one complete unit!
    • In this 5-week complete unit, students will learn introductory skills to understanding poetry by practicing their ability to deeply analyze, think abstractly, understand elements like meter, and be introduced to sonnets

OVERVIEW/DETAILS
    • A zoom lesson complete with lecture and comprehension/discussion questions
    • Practice Poems with open-ended questions (aka homework) will be assigned each week
    • An open-note multiple-choice and short-answer quiz
    • A "final" will be given at the conclusion of the course containing multiple-choice and short answer questions

TEACHING STYLE
    • Student-to-student discussion and interaction
    • I aim to facilitate conversation, protect think-time, and posing questions that provoke deeper thought based on the central text. 
    • I love interacting with my students!  I will be apart of the conversation as well 😁
    • Mini-lessons will be shared to ensure all students comprehend concepts and themes
    • While students will be challenged to think deeply, their perspective will always be encouraged and celebrated.  
    • I hope that students feel as welcomed to think as they are challenged in their thinking. 
    • Down-to-earth discussions and I love an occasional tangent so that learning is organic!

Lesson 1:
Perceiving Poetry
 Students will be eased into poetry.  They will learn 5 hints that will help them approach any poem with confidence

Mastering Meter (1)
 Students will learn about stressed and unstressed syllables--the foundational skill to learning about the rhythm of poetry.

Master Meter (2)
 Students will use their new understanding of stressed and unstressed syllables to see how poets use them to create a rhythm out of words!

Lesson 4:
Discerning Sonnets
 Students will step into Shakespeare and how he used certain aspects of poetry to develop a particular form--sonnets

Skeleton notes are best filled out after being printed, however, they can be filled out digitally as well after "downloading" the copy and then "saving (your) own copy"
