This class offers a thrilling journey through Cinder by Marissa Meyer, blending reading with four unique, hands-on art projects inspired by different artistic styles. Students will dive deep into the world of Cinder, uncovering its futuristic, fantastical elements while developing their creativity through engaging art activities. Required Materials: Cinder, by Marissa Meyer: eBook or physical book and optional audiobook as necessary. Various art supplies as necessary or access to digital platforms like Canva if students choose to use digital media. Concepts Taught: Reading Comprehension: Understanding and analyzing the plot, characters, and themes of Cinder. Critical Thinking: Exploring deeper meanings behind character actions and societal structures. Art Appreciation: Learning how different artistic styles can reflect and enhance the storytelling of Cinder. Creative Expression: Applying artistic techniques to express personal interpretations of the book's themes and characters. Topics Covered: Plot and Character Analysis: Exploring Cinder’s journey and transformation throughout the story. Thematic Exploration: Understanding the main themes like identity, sacrifice, and power. Art Styles: Learning about Cyberpunk, Steampunk, Art Deco, and Pop Art. Art and Literature Connection: How the visual style influences storytelling and vice versa. Class Structure: Each class is designed to be engaging, creative, and interactive: Book Discussion: We dive into the book's chapters, analyze characters, plot twists, and themes. Art Project Introduction: Every 2 weeks, we focus on a new art style that corresponds with the book's progress. Art Creation: Students engage in hands-on activities to create their own masterpieces. Reflection & Sharing: Each student shares their artwork and discusses how it relates to Cinder. Teaching Style: My teaching style is collaborative, creative, and student-centered. I believe in learning through exploration and discussion. Here’s how it will unfold: Guided Discussions: We’ll analyze Cinder together, making connections between text and artistic expression. Interactive Activities: Students will have time to experiment with various media and artistic techniques. Art Style Introductions: Guidance on how to create pieces inspired by each art style. Show-and-Tell: Students will share their artwork, receive feedback, and discuss their thought process. Interaction: Students will have plenty of opportunities to interact: Group Discussions: Active participation in discussions about the book’s themes, characters, and plot. Q&A Sessions: Students have opportunities to ask questions during discussion time. Collaborative Projects: Working together on creative tasks and sharing ideas. The Four Art Projects: Cyberpunk Art: Create neon-lit, futuristic cityscapes inspired by Cinder’s setting in New Beijing, blending human and machine. Steampunk Art: Design vintage, gear-driven pieces like a mechanical ball gown or futuristic accessories, reflecting the steampunk aesthetic. Art Deco: Craft elegant, symmetrical pieces that capture the luxury of royal life, inspired by Cinder’s emerging identity as Princess Selene. We will read and discuss Chapters 1-7. We will introduce our first art project (cyberpunk) and brainstorm ways to approach it.

We will show off our cyberpunk art projects. We will read and discuss Chapters 16-19. We will begin our second art project (steampunk) and brainstorm ways to approach it.

Other Details
Learning Needs
This class encourages using audiobooks with eBooks to support dyslexic students, allowing them to follow the text while listening. It helps with comprehension, fluency, and retention, making the experience more accessible and enjoyable.
Parental Guidance
The book is intended for teen readers and contains some intense or violent scenes without being overly graphic. It is a very loose retelling of Cinderella in a dystopian futuristic sci-fi setting. You should research the book if you have any concerns about its suitability for your learner.
Supply List
If learners intend to do physical instead of digital art projects, they will need a variety of art supplies that compliment their chosen projects. Digital are will require access to a design program like Canva, Photoshop, etc. They must also have access to the book Cinder, by Marissa Meyer, and the audiobook if necessary for reading support.
