Objective: Students will first model fractions by drawing a tape diagram. We will then compare fractions by composing our tape diagrams into larger units. We will begin class by discussing/reviewing the meaning of “area/decompose/multiplication.” These skills are being reviewed from Part 1: Comparing Fractions with an Area Model. Students will have the opportunity to discuss and explore area as “length times width” and decompose as "breaking a part/smaller units by multiplying." This will lead the class to an application problem on building fractions and applying what we know about "composing" (grouping) to help construct an area model (tape diagram) to find equivalence. Students will be able to identify equivalent fractions by using an area model. We will explore what operation this relates to (division) when composing fractions. We will then move to concept development as we learn about making larger units by composing. Students will use this strategy to help with comparing fractions as equivalent, greater than, or less than. Students will learn the concept of “composing” (grouping) fraction units to make bigger units. We will identify what operation is used when “composing” units to make larger fraction units (division). Vocabulary: Decompose/multiply Compose/divide Tape diagram/array Area/Area model Equivalent Greater than Less than This lesson is based on Engage NY Eureka Math strategies that are aligned with common core standards.

I would like to say thank you for taking the time out to read a little bit about me and for considering me as a part of your child’s learning journey! My passion for teaching continues to strengthen as each year passes! I take pride in building relationships with my students. Having a positive and welcoming environment is something that helps facilitate learning which ensures student engagement and success! I strive for my classroom environment to be warm and welcoming. It is important to me that my students are able to make meaningful connections and build confidence. My ultimate goal is to provide the best learning experience for my students that gets them excited and passionate about learning.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I am currently certified to teach grades Pre-K—5 and Special Education Grades K—12. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I also hold a certification in School Counseling. I have taught (and still teach) in a public school setting going on 13 years. The first 4 years I taught 3rd grade, pre-k and kindergarten. Now, for the past 9 years and counting, I have been teaching Special Education in the Elementary setting. Teaching regular and special education has provided me with countless opportunities to work with a variety of students. I have the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students. I am also able to individualize lessons and provide direct, explicit instruction by providing modifications and accommodations when necessary.
I was introduced to online teaching when I began my experience of teaching English as a Second Language with VIPkid to students who were learning English. This experience had motivated me to branch out and continue teaching online. It had inspired me to expand my platform providing me with the opportunity of teaching classes online for 5 years. I love meeting new people and being able to help make a difference in a learner’s educational experience.
Thank you for reading, and I hope to work with your child in the future! I am looking forward to meeting many students and exploring new concepts with them.
