What's included

1 live meeting
50 mins in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. I will give your student these tools to learn how to increase their reading speed and accuracy BUT it is up to your student to use them and practice them. They won't come easy or naturally. It is like training for a running race, they need to practice and work on these skills to really see any effect on their reading.
Progress Report
I am happy to let you know how your student is doing and where they can improve.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Intermediate Level
Pacing is how fast or slow you read. Reading one word at a time can make you read really, really slowly. By learning to group words and phrases together, you can increase both your reading speed and accuracy. In this fun and interactive class, we’ll explore exciting techniques to help you read faster and understand better. You’ll practice with engaging stories and/or poems, play games, and have friendly competitions with your classmates and the teacher. Get ready to become a reading superstar!”
Learning Goals
A class that will give tips on how to become a fast and more efficient reader. We want to raise their speed and accuracy. We want a chance to try all these reading tools. You student can chose and use the ones that work best for them.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will be reading from the public domain children stories or poems. Sometimes we will come across a word or phrase that isn't used today or it has a different meaning and isn't expectable in todays society. I will try to avoid those kind of words but one might slip from me. I will explain the words and help the students understand the old language and behavior. It would be fun to read from books that they like or books they need to read. They can bring them to class but not necessary.
Pre-Requisites
This class can stand alone. I do teach this class as a part of a series in a 10 tip reading comprehension program. This is Tip # 9.
Supply List
I have digital copies of books. If they want to bring their own reading book that is fine. It isn't required. It is optional. Please bring a notebook to write down new words and phrases. You can record times or take notes.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Teacher Clarissa. Some like to call me Storybox Lady!

I help students of any reading level too:

@) Read a Story
@) Understand what they have just read (reading comprehension)
@) Connect to the Story in an emotional way

I use 10 tips for better Reading Comprehension and Understanding

1. Look at the story 2. Prior Knowledge 3. Vocabulary 4. Context Clues 5. Settings 6. Characters 7. Main Plot/Main Conflict 8. Summary/Notes 9. Pacing 10. Connection to the story

I have taught ESL for 5 years on many platforms, not just to Chinese children, but for children all over the world. My main experience comes from teaching and volunteering 20 plus years to children in church classes, my community, and Boy Scouts of America settings.

I've taught children to sing, to play, to think, and helped them develop skills in their lives so they could become better adults and better humans in their communities.

I believe a child has a right to be protected and heard. I will show respect to them and I hope for the same from them. I want to do my best to bring out the best in children and let them know they are wanted and validated. They have wisdom beyond their years and we as adults need to stop and listen to them. They see things we can't see.
I'm excited to get to know your child in my classroom. I may be simple in teaching without to many bells and whistles but I've got heart, kindness, patience and a fun sense of play and humor to my personality. See you in the classroom.
