US Grade 8 - 12
One-on-one lessons are catered to the individual learner's needs. The parent may request topics or skills they would like me to cover with the learner. Alternatively, I can assess the learner's abilities and create lessons based on individual needs. Each session will begin with a review of the previous lesson (except the first session which will begin with introductions). After a brief review, an element of writing will be discussed and practiced. Verbal feedback will be given. The learner is encouraged to upload work to the classroom between class sessions for individualized, specific feedback. Lesson topics will vary depending on parent request and learner needs. Below is a sample of possible topics. The class will match the pace of the learner, so we may go faster and cover more or slow down and cover less. Day 1 Introductions Thesis Statements Day 2 Credibility Day 3 Coherence and Development Day 4 Using Sources A google doc will be created for your learner. This allows us to share notes, and is an easy, convenient way for me to access their homework. I have experience teaching writing from elementary school through college. I believe that writing is a skill that is needed in the work world, academia, and even in day-to-day living. The stronger our writing skills are, the more we get what we want out of life because with the ability to write comes the ability to think critically and to present a logical argument. This four-week writing package is a good option if you would like to pay for a set of one-on-one lessons upfront.
Learning Goals
Students will work on a set of writing skills based on parent request, learner need, and teacher recommendation.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in English from California State University
I have taught English for 26 years at all levels: elementary school, middle school, dual enrollment, and college, and currently I homeschool my lovely children, who are 11 and 13 years old. I have taught mainstream, remedial, and GATE (gifted and talented) classes.
I have bachelor's and master's degrees in English from California State Universities.
I believe that everyone can learn and that how much you learn often depends much on the amount of effort you're willing to invest. To that end, I try to encourage and motivate my students to have a can-do attitude and a growth mindset. In part, that means that both the learner and the instructor may have to look for outside-the-box ways to approach a topic in order to make it more accessible.
For fun, I enjoy being outdoors. I love nature, wildlife, and hiking. I also enjoy spending time at home reading and sewing. Every so often I take a class in something I've never done before just to remind myself what it feels like to be new to a topic. This helps me feel compassion for my learners who are not yet experts in my content area, and it keeps me humble and helps me think of creative ways to reach my learners.
