6 live meetings
2 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. For reading, learners will read an assigned book or story prior to class. For writing, although we will regularly start working on a writing assignment during the lessons, the learner should be prepared and willing to finish writing or revising outside of class.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 5
Semi-private lessons are a more affordable option for siblings or peers to gain the benefits of private lessons. Two learners with similar skill levels can receive instruction at the same time, with a fair amount of individual attention. The parent(s) may request topics or skills they would like me to cover with the children; however, please note that I will create the lessons. This is not a homework help type of class. Lesson topics will vary depending on parent request and learner needs. Below is a sample of possible writing topics. The class will match the pace of the learner, so we may go faster and cover more or slow down and cover less. Week 1 Introductions Prewriting and Outlining Techniques Week 2 Topic Sentences Week 3 Supporting Evidence Week 4 Coherence and Development Week 5 Concluding Sentences Week 6 Revising I have experience teaching writing from elementary school through college. I believe that writing skills are needed in the work world, in academia, and even in day-to-day living. The stronger our writing skills are, the more we get what we want out of life because with the ability to write comes the ability to think critically and to present a logical argument. Please understand that I cannot run this class if the minimum number of learners (2) is not met. If you would like private lessons for one learner, please check out some of my private one-on-one classes.
Learning Goals
Students will work on a set of writing or reading skills based on parent request, learner need, and teacher recommendation.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in English from California State University
I have been an English teacher since 1997, and I have experience with elementary school, middle school, dual enrollment, and college, and currently I homeschool my lovely children, who are 12 and 14 years old. I have taught mainstream, remedial, and GATE (gifted and talented) classes.
I have bachelor's and master's degrees in English from California State Universities.
I believe that everyone can learn and that how much you learn often depends much on the amount of effort you're willing to invest. To that end, I try to encourage and motivate my students to have a can-do attitude and a growth mindset. In part, that means that both the learner and the instructor may have to look for outside-the-box ways to approach a topic in order to make it more accessible.
For fun, I enjoy being outdoors. I love nature, wildlife, and hiking. I also enjoy spending time at home reading and sewing. Every so often I take a class in something I've never done before just to remind myself what it feels like to be new to a topic. This helps me feel compassion for my learners who are not yet experts in my content area, and it keeps me humble and helps me think of creative ways to reach my learners.
