Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Learners can expect to enjoy discussions, games, puzzles and other activities and will cover several topics per class from the accompanying list below. This class is designed to promote fluency and regular recap opportunities for learners in all-round numeracy skills. This will vary from week-to-week based on the schedule below and learners' and parents' requests, preferences and need identified in previous classes.

Classes will rotate weekly as follows:

Week 1 - Sept 2nd, Oct 7th, Nov 4th, Dec 2nd: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division and Order of Operations with integers, negative numbers and decimals

Week 2 - Sept 9th, Oct 14th, Nov 11th, Dec 9th: Fractions, Decimals & Percentages, Probability

Week 3 - Sept 16th, Oct 21st, Nov 18th, Dec 16th: Factors, Multiples, HCF, LCM, Prime Numbers, Ratio and Special Numbers

Week 4 - Sept 23rd, Oct 28th, Nov 25th, Dec 23rd: Rounding, Estimation, Working with Decimals, Standard Form

Week 5 - Sept 30th, Dec 30th: Currency and Questions on Money, Real-Life Maths

Topics in this class will also tailor to learners' needs. Students and parents are invited to contact me on enrolment and/or weekly to inform me of any particular numeracy topics which need particular attention.

I invite learners to share what they already know, what they find tricky and how they see the problem. We will go through concrete examples, move onto working independently then enjoy fun tasks, rapidly gaining confidence. Games, puzzles and quizzes are purposeful tasks which I like to include as well as looking at misconceptions and exam-style questions.

Sharing our own homework tasks, mistakes and wins is also very useful in deepening learners' understanding so students are encouraged to share as much as possible with myself and each other the specifics of what they are working on, any clips and links to useful resources and using our discussions to help each other.

Topics will include:
Methods of Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Subtraction
Mental Arithmetic Methods
Factors & Multiples
Order of Operations
Rounding
Decimals
Everything on Fractions, Decimals & Percentages
Exponents/Index Laws
Special Numbers
Negative Numbers
Estimation
Currency Conversions
Ratio
Learning Goals
I teach using exciting resources, concise explanations and well-selected activities enabling learners to share their thoughts and ideas, help each other and make great progress. Employing adaptive teaching will enable learners to choose their activity so all students in the class are catered for and monitored as they work, practice skills and enjoy fun and engaging activities, games and puzzles each week.

I invite pupils to share their knowledge, hints, tips and easy wins as well as develop their verbal reasoning by explaining their thought processes in group discussions.

Students will improve their accuracy, speed and confidence as we work on numeracy in general, for help with homework to prepare for a test or to boost all-round confidence.

Supply List
Occasionally pupils may be asked to bring along equipment such as a calculator, pencils, crayons, a ruler, or items to count out or measure, such as dried food items or leaves. Parents will be notified well in advance of this and should it be difficult to source an item in time, a contingency plan will be made to provide for the learner ensuring inclusion and no singling out occurs.

Pupils may benefit from a mini whiteboard and markers to share their ideas with others and myself in class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
