In this lesson, students will learn the concept "monarchy"--the rule of one--including its ancient Greek roots. They will be shown examples of monarchy from ancient Egypt and China to medieval Europe that will reveal how monarchy arises and why it is so widespread in history. We will close with a discussion of why monarchy has been replaced by democracy in modern life. No background knowledge of history or government is required. This is specifically designed to be an initial exposure. There is no homework, although a simple worksheet will be provided to help students cement their understanding. PLEASE NOTE: Many five year old students have successfully navigated this lesson and other lessons in this series, but I have adjusted the guidance on this series to age 6+ to help parents understand that not all five year olds are ready. If your student is under six years old, please give extra consideration to their readiness before enrolling. It is recommended that students continue with "My First History Class: Democracy."

Controversial or polemical topics have little or no place in an introductory presentation of history. This type of class is all about the basics.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
As a teacher of history for 15 years now, I have worked with students of all levels in private schools and online homeschooling, including students just starting out and older students who never received a proper history education until it was too late. The former group is a joy to work with, because as a teacher you get to guide them into a wonderful world of exotic stories and important lessons. The latter is so difficult to help, because in most cases the window of opportunity to impart the value of history has passed. Having so much experience with both groups, my goal in this class is to help you give your child the gift of the kind of compelling history education neither you nor I received, and thereby help prevent them from being relegated to the group of older students later in life that just cannot connect with a subject they see as irrelevant.
