Through presentation, collaborative discussion, experiments, and demonstrations, students will learn the fundamentals of the following body systems: Week One: Intro into the human body. The Skeletal System -Basic structure and function of bones and the locations of major bones. -Common skeletal problems and how to avoid them. Good dental care and nutritious diet. -Experiment with chicken bones. The Muscular System -Voluntary muscles and involuntary muscles and their role in body functions. -Muscular problems such as Congenital Muscular Dystrophy and injury. The importance of exercise, strength building, and flexibility. Week Two: The Integumentary System -The three layers of skin and their function. Melanin and carotene. -Sun damage and acne. The importance of sun protection and good hygiene practices. The Digestive System -Abdominal organs and digestive process. -Common digestive conditions like Celiac and Chron's Disease. Importance of a healthy diet. -Digestion experiment/demonstration. Week Three: The Respiratory System -Basic structure of the respiratory tract. -Common problems such as cough and cold, Asthma, smoking. Good hand hygiene practices. Circulatory System -Composition of the heart and very basics of cardiac function. -Problems such as congenital heart defects, Hypertension, Coronary Artery Disease. -Heart healthy diet. As class time allows, the class will participate in content review games using Kahoot. Some classes move at a fast pace when students are grasping concepts quickly, other classes have more discussion and less time for these games.
Learning Goals
Students will develop a basic understanding of human body systems as well as the location of many major organs and their functions. Students will explore several health problems and learn the importance of proper health practices for maintaining good health through adulthood.

Supply List
Outlines for note-taking will be uploaded to the classroom. They are not required, but they are very helpful for retaining all of the information and playing the review games. Materials for the optional extension activities will be common household objects and will be listed on the instruction sheets.

I've educated patients and families for 10 years in healthcare as a Registered Nurse. I have worked exclusively in pediatrics. I've worked within schools, wellness clinics, and with patients with complex medical conditions. I also homeschool my children and teach in several programs.
